  • Lonavala is one of Maharashtra’s most popular hill stations. It is located between Pune and Mumbai on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway (NH48) in the western ghats, locally known as the Sahyadri Range.
  • Lonavala was developed after 1871 as a hill station accessible from Mumbai.
  • Along with its twin hill station - Khandala, Lonavala makes an ideal weekend monsoon getaway.
  • A number of caves such as Karla, Bhaja are located in its vicinity.
  • For trekking and history lovers, forts such as Lohagad, Visapur, Tikona and Tung are nearby.
  • Lonavala is very famous for its jaggery based candy known as chikki.
  • Best time to visit is from June to September for enjoying the monsoons and the stunning views.

Connectivity

  • Railhead: There are a number of trains running from Mumbai to Lonavala. All trains on the Mumbai- Pune route have Lonavala as a stop. From Pune, there are local trains every day. The Lonavala train station is located in the centre of the city near Shivaji Chowk. There are a number of auto rickshaws available here and you can hire them for the whole day.
  • By Road: Both the expressway and old highway sections of the NH48 pass through Lonavala. There are state transport as well as private buses from Dadar and Andheri in Mumbai and Swargate in Pune, every one hour which stops in Lonavala.
    The state bus stop is located at a distance of 1km from the railway station.
  • Airport: The nearest airports are Pune International Airport at 65 km and CSMIA in Mumbai at 110 km.

  • Lonavala is one of Maharashtra’s oldest hill stations and also has one of the oldest railway stations of the country.

Go to Tiger’s Point and see the view from up there. In the monsoons, you can see the clouds below you. If you look closely, you can see an impression of a tiger trying to leap across the valley, which is why the viewpoint has earned its name. The echo produced by rocks falling into the crevasse is another highlight of this point. 

  • While coming back to the centre of town, stop at the Bhushi Dam. In heavy rains, people usually have fun on dam steps that are overflowing with water. There are a number of food stalls here where you can have pakoras, corn and tea.
  • Have lunch in the town.

Lunch Options:

After lunch, head to Karla caves, a distance of about 10 km from the centre. These Buddhist caves are almost 2000 years old and their carvings, pillars and statues are the main attraction here. (Timings 9 AM to 6 PM)

After coming back from the Karla caves and if time permits, you can also make a quick stop at Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum, where wax statues of famous personalities are displayed. (Timings 9 AM to 9:30 Pm, Ticket Cost - INR 200/-)

  • In the evening, you can go to Lion’s Point for a view of the sunset. If it’s too cloudy or raining then you can take a stroll around the Shivaji Chowk area and sit by the Lonavala Lake.

Lonavala is known for its chikki and Maganlal’s is one of the oldest shops selling it. There are many branches of Maganlal throughout Lonavala and you can find some on the Main Bazaar Road.

  • You may buy chocolate walnut fudge at Cooper’s or Purohit’s Sweets in Jaichand Chowk. 

Dinner Options: 

  • Maval Maratha - Simple village-style food with fresh Bhakris cooked in front of you.
  • Mapro Garden - Known for its sandwiches and pizzas. 
Suggestion - It is ideal to book a cab for the day if you do not have your own vehicle. Since Lonavala is a hill station, the roads are uphill and finding public transport at the viewpoints might become difficult.

Day 2 - Visit to Fort and Caves

Have breakfast in the city early in the morning.

  • Breakfast Options:
    • Buvachi Misal - One of the best places in Lonavala to eat Misal, an authentic Maharashtrian breakfast dish.
    • Golden Vada Pav - Famous for its fresh vada-pav.

Go to the Lohagarh fort base, which is around 15 km from the centre via car and then you can trek up to the fort which takes around 1 hour to ascend. After reaching the top, you can relax and enjoy the view. There is a Shiva temple and a well which you can also see on top.

  • After coming back down to the base village via the same way there are a number of small food joints where you can have lunch. 

Lunch Option:

  • There are many Veg and Non-Veg food Thali stalls in Malavali base village at the foot of Lohagad fort.

After lunch, you can head to the Bhaja caves which are 800-year-old Buddhist caves, similar to Karla caves. They are located on the way back from Lohagad. There is also a waterfall here which is active only in the monsoon season. (Timings 8 AM to 6 PM)

Head back to your accommodation as per your further travel arrangements. 

Suggestion - If you have the time you can also see the Visapur fort which is located directly opposite Lohagad. 

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • Pawna lake which is around 1 hour away by car from Lonavala is a great location to camp. There are organised camps with tent accommodation and barbeques here. 
  • For trekking enthusiasts, Tung Fort, Rajmachi, Mrugagad and Tikona are also located near Lonavala.
  • Duke’s Nose,a mountain peak formation, is also located here and is also a good beginners trek.
  • If you want to experience luxury, Aamby Valley City is also nearby with 5 star accommodation options and adventure sport activities. 
  • The Machan is a luxury tree house-inspired hotel in Lonavala. Staying here is an experience in itself as it is in the middle of a forest and most of their suites are located in tree houses. 
  • Khandala, which is adjacent to Lonavala has some good viewing points.
