Best time to visit

November to February

  • Malvan is a town and taluka of Sindhudurg district spread over 640 sq.km with a population of around 19000. 
  • It is well known for the sea fort, Malvani cuisine, quaint fishing villages, and beautiful beaches.
  • Best time to visit:
    • November to February is good time as the climate is pleasant.
    • You can also plan to visit Malvan during the Ganesh Festival, celebrated during Aug/Sept period.

How to reach?

  • Railhead: The nearest railhead is Kudal around 30 km from Malvan town. 
  • By road: State transport buses, as well as private transport buses, connect Malvan town with the major cities of Maharashtra. While traveling on your vehicle take a diversion from Kasal (around 35 km) on the Mumbai-Goa highway.
  • Airport: The nearest airport is at Dabolim, Goa (around 130 km)A new airport has been constructed at Chipi (around 12 km), however, currently, only Alliance Air operates flights from Mumbai.
  • Local travel: Rickshaws are available for going from one tourist location to the other as well as nearby towns. However, they would not operate on a meter and you will have to fix the fare before boarding the rickshaw.

Day 1 - Sea Fort visit, Beach Visit, Malvani Food exploration.

  • Hotel Sagar Kinara: A budget hotel near the Dandi beach in the town. The landline number to reach them is 02365- 252264. The room tariff starts from Rs 2000.
  • MTDC Resort: (6 km), a medium-budget resort located right on the beach. The room tariff starts from Rs 3500.

Assuming that you reach Malvan around noon, have an early lunch.

  • You can have lunch at the below places:
    • Chaitanya: This eatery is famous for its fried fish and solkadhi. It is located in Somvar Peth.
    • Athithi Bamboo: This eatery is famous for its seafood. It is located on Kacheri road.
    • Swami Family Restaurant: This eatery is famous for thalis and crab masala. It is located near Mama Warekar theater. 

Note: The roads near Somvar Peth are narrow and it is one way. Car parking could be a problem near the restaurants. Also, there could be huge crowds during May because of vacation time.

Sindhudurg Fort: After having lunch, visit the sea fort. One of the most important sea forts of Maharashtra which was constructed in 1664, spread over 48 acres. This is also one of few living forts in India.

  • One has to take a boat from Dandi beach to reach Sindhudurg fort. The charges are Rs 90 per adult and Rs 50 for children between 3-12 years.( Charges are for -To & Fro)
  • The boat will wait for 20 passengers before they start the journey. It takes around 10 minutes to reach the fort.
  • Main points include the right handprint and left footprint of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Queen’s beach, 3 sweet water wells, temples of Lord Hanuman, Jarimari, and Shivaji Maharaj.

Dhamapur Lake: Post the fort visit, you can move on to Dhamapur on the outskirts. There is a  large man-made lake constructed in 1530 and is one of the biggest lakes in the district spread over 36 hectares.

  • Located at a 20 km distance from the Malvan town. A Bhagwati Devi temple, constructed in Hemadpanthi style, is located on the periphery of the lake. The temple is the part of the earth-filled dam which was constructed to hold the water of the lake.
  • A boating facility is also available in the lake. 125 species of birds can be found in the forest surrounding the lake. 
  • One can spend around an hour and a half near the lake and then travel back to Malvan town.

  • Malvan Food Station: Located at the parking area where you can have Sabudana Wada or Batata Wada and finish it off with Kokam Sharbat or Kairi Panna.
  • Swayam Naturals: 500 meters from Malvan Food Station where you can purchase various homemade products (pickles, jam, soap etc).

ChivlaAfter snacks, if time permits, move back to the town to visit the beach, or visit the Ganesh temple (see below). If time does not permit then visit the beach after shopping on the second day.

  • You have to come back to Malvan town by travelling 20 km to visit Chivla beach. Rock Garden is another place with rides for children which is a 10 minutes walk. Both these places are  well known for their sunset.
  • One can also indulge in a Fish Spa here. The charges are around Rs 100 for 10 minutes per person.

Ganesh TempleAfter having snacks, or seeing the sunset, visit the nearby Temple which is at a walking distance from the garden.

  • The Jay Ganesh temple is also known as Salgaonkar Ganesh temple where the idol of Lord Ganesh is made of gold.
The evening could be spent in the bazaar area also known as Somvar Peth purchasing homemade masalas and food products. See Things to Buy section below.

  • Naivedya: This eatery is a purely vegetarian one, famous for its Thali. It is located near Daivadnya Bhavan.

Day 2 - Fish Market and Water sports activities at Devbag

Devbag BeachThen move on to Devbag Beach located at a 12 km distance from Malvan town. This is the place where the Karli river meets the Arabian Sea. You can see the meeting point from the seashore.

  • In the morning the locals organize a boat ride showing around a few points taking around an hour and a half, this activity would cost approximately - Rs 2500.
  • Snorkeling can also be done here. They can also help you organize Scuba diving.
  • One of the points is Tsunami Island. This island was created on its own during the 2004 Tsunami. Sports activities are organized throughout the day on this island which includes banana rides, jet skis, etc.

Tarkarli Beach: After enjoying water activities, move on to Tarkarli Beach located at a 6 km distance from the Devbag. Well known for its pristine beach with clear water and the fort view.

You can have lunch at any of the below places:

  • Tamhankar’s: This eatery is famous for its Butter Garlic Prawns and Kaju Masala. It is located at Tarkarli
  • Only Fish Restaurant: This eatery is famous for its SeaFood. It is located at Tarkarli.
