Thane can be said to be a sister city of Mumbai located at the north of Salsette Island (The Island on which Mumbai is located). It is famous for its urban parks and Lakes such as Masunda, Upvan, & Makhmali. It is also the headquarters of the Thane district.

  • There are approximately 25-30 lakes within the city limits but around 8-9 of them are accessible and worth visiting.
  • Thane is divided into east and west, with the western part being more popular with tourists and shoppers.
  • It is flanked by the Sanjay Gandhi Park on its west side and Yeoor Hills, a small township at the base of it acts as a tourist destination.
  • There are many historic Churches and Temples in the city.
  • The best time to visit Thane is from November to March when the weather is pleasant.

How to reach?

  • Railhead - Thane is well connected to other cities in Maharashtra via Kalyan or Mumbai through locals also. It takes around 1 hour from CSMT in Mumbai to reach Thane. Thane railway station is located in the centre of Thane near Naupada.
  • By road - Thane is well connected to Mumbai via the Eastern Express Highway. You can also find Municipal corporation buses to almost every neighbourhood of Mumbai. The State Transport bus stand is located opposite the railway station where you can find buses to major cities in Maharashtra. Volvo buses also plying to Nashik, Pune etc can be boarded from Vandana Talkies. There are auto-rickshaws and taxis available at the bus stops or railway station.
  • Airport - The CSMIA in Andheri/ Vile Parle is the nearest airport located about 30 kms from Thane.

A day in Thane

You are recommended to start your day at around 9 AM and some best breakfast options are given as below. Breakfast options at Naupada Area:

Yeoor Hills: It is located at a distance of about 6 kms from the Naupada area. You can start your day here. Located at the foot of the Sanjay Gandhi forest area, this place looks stunning in the monsoon season. The view of Thane city from here is worth looking at. You can also hike around, or just spend your quality time in nature. 

  • You take a break at the Upvan Lake. The lake is located at the base of Yeoor Hills. 
  • A good place to have lunch is in the Naupada area, which is around 5-6 kms from Yeoor.

Lunch options at Naupada/Ghantali area:

  • Suraj - Known for its Vegetarian options, Veg Chilly Milly Kabab and Sizzling Noodles with Rice are the best combo to have.
  • Kunj Vihar - Well known for street style Vada Pav, Bhaji Pav, Kachori and Samosa.
  • Koli Katta - Sea food options. Surmai (Kingfish) and Pomfret curry in Konkani style are must-haves.

Naupada, Central area of Thane - This is one of the oldest parts of Thane which is filled with various shopping places on Gokhale road, Ram Maruti road, eating at Talao Pali vicinity and religious places such as the old churches and the Hindu patron deity of Thane are also along the Talao Pali lake.

Kopineshwar Mandir, considered to be the patron deity of Thane. This temple is in the Naupada area next to the Talao Pali lake. This Mandir dates back to antiquity, but the current structure was renovated in the 18th and 19th century by the Peshwas.

You can also visit the St John Baptist Church which is also nearby at a walking distance from the Talao Pali lake. This church is more than 400 years old and has some old art work on the walls.

Stroll around the Talao Pali lake: This is the most famous lake of Thane where the local's shop, dine and walk around in the evenings. 

  • You can end your day with dinner nearby.

  • Green Leaf - Simple vegetarian menu options.
  • Konkani Haus - Famous for seafood and also sweets such as kharvas. You can also try Bhajniche wade and Malvani Murgh masala along with Solkadi.

  • Ram Maruti road is a shopping hub for every pocket size with everything from street stalls selling products for a bargain to niche stores and boutiques for specialized products to high-end international brands.
  • There are multiple Mall options available in Thane such as Metro Junction Mall, Korum Mall, Hyper City Mall and High Street Mall

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • If you are interested in Marathi culture, try and attend a play or a dance performance at the Gadkari Rangayatan.
  • You can explore street food in the Talao Pali area. Thane is well known for its street style Bhelpuri, Milkshakes and juices at Preeti near Talao Pali and Misal from Mamledar Kacheri.
  • There is a waterfall about 10 kms from the centre known as the Chirma Devi waterfall. If you have the time, monsoons and immediately after it, is a good season to go and visit this place.
  • Mumbra Devi temple in Kalwa, around 4 kms from Thane Station, is on a hill and offers good views of the city.
  • Kelva Beach, Stretching for a coastline of 7 km along the gorgeous Arabian Sea, Kelva Beach is one of the top weekend getaways in Maharashtra. Lined with beautiful Suru trees, the dreamy golden sands of the beach are ideal for sunbathing, lazing or taking long romantic walks.
