  • Ratnagiri is a city as well as a district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. In this itinerary, we’ll explore Ratnagiri city.
  • This small city on India’s west coast is known for its incredibly sweet Alphonso mangoes, cashews, coconuts & authentic Konkani seafood.
  • Tourists visit this place for its pristine beaches & historical forts. Surrounded by the Sahyadris (India’s western ghats) and the Arabian sea, the scenic beauty of Ratnagiri is mesmerizing.

How to Reach Ratnagiri?

  • By Rail – Ratnagiri railway station is one of the main railway stations of the Konkan railway which makes travel easier for tourists. Several express trains such as Janshatabdi Express, Garib Rath Express, Mangalore Express halt at this station. It is 3 km outside the main city.
  • By Air – Pune Airport – 310 km, Mumbai Airport – 450 km. You can also use the Chipi Airport at Sindhudurg which is at a distance of 170 km from Ratnagiri but currently, the frequency of flights being operated is low.
  • Travel by Road – To reach Ratnagiri you can use the Mumbai- Goa Highway by simply taking a right from Hath Khamba. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation(MSRTC) offers regular and frequent bus services from Thane, Satara and Pune.
  • Local Travel within the city – For local sightseeing, you can either use public transport like auto rickshaws and taxis which are sufficiently available or rent a cab as per your convenience.

Ratnagiri Marine Fish Museum - After lunch, you can begin your local journey by visiting the Ratnagiri Marine Fish Museum. It is located on the Ratnagiri-Bhagwati Temple Road at a distance of 5 km from the town.

The museum constitutes a huge whale skeleton & some rare specimens like sea snakes, starfish, triggerfish, yellow boxfish and many more.

Ratnadurg Fort – After exploring the Museum, you can visit the Ratnadurg Fort which is located at a distance of 3 km from the Marine Fish Museum. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from the hands of Adil Shah. Enclosed by the Arabian sea on 3 sides, the historical fort of Ratnadurg is spread over an area of 120 acres.

Mandavi BeachSince there is a beach next to Ratnadurg fort one should also visit the beach and enjoy the beautiful waves. The Mandavi Beach has black sand and a vast line of the seashore.

Patit Pavan Mandir – The Patit Pavan Mandir at a distance of 2 km from Mandavi Beach can be your next go to spot. This place is associated with Veer Savarkar. 
On the ground floor, a small 20 min film is shown based on the life of Veer Savarkar. Some of his belongings such as a stick, revolver, glasses, etc. are displayed on the first floor memorial of Veer Savarkar.

Lokmanya Tilak Birthplace – It is maintained by the archaeological department of India and is located at a distance of 0.5 km from Patit Pavan Mandir. Tilak Ali Museum is the ancestral house of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prominent freedom fighter of India. 
A classic example of Konkani architecture, the paintings and pictures depict his struggle for Indian Independence.

Day 2 – Beach, Coconut Research visit & Food exploration

You can start your day by having breakfast at any one of the popular breakfast options mentioned below which open by 7 in the morning:

Aare Ware BeachAfter breakfast, you can have a nice stroll across Aare Ware Beach which is almost 14 km from Ratnagiri city. Aare and ware are twin beaches separated by a cliff.  The beach is blessed with a heavenly seashore and clear blue water which will leave you with sheer tranquillity.

Thiba Palace – After encountering a delightful beach view, you can come back to the city (14 km from Aare Ware Beach) and visit the historic Thiba Palace. 
In 1885, the British Army transferred King Thiba from Bramhadesh(today’s Myanmar) to Ratnagiri.
After that, in 1910, a huge Bramhi styled three-storied palace was built for King Thiba in an area of 27 acres. 
Thiba Palace is also considered to be a nice photographic point.

Shrine/tomb of King Thiba  - At a distance of 1.5 km from Thiba Palace, you can also visit this place.

Coconut Research Center – After spending time at the Thiba Palace tourists can have a guided tour of the Coconut Research Center which is situated at a distance of 4 km from Thiba Palace. 

  • Tourists can gain knowledge about the various research processes followed there. Information about cross culturing of mangoes is also provided over here.
  • At a distance of 250-500 m from the Coconut Research Center is a craftsman who makes different types of crafts and carvings using coconut. You can ask the local people to take you there.

Swami Swaroopanand Samadhi MathPost lunch you can also visit the Swami Swaroopanand Samadhi Math in Pawas. This is the place where Swami Swaroopanand ji took birth and took his samadhi as well. 
People can experience the mantra jap and holy environment at this place. It is located at a distance of 19 km from Ratnagiri.

Gateway of RatnagiriAfter returning back to the city (19 km from Ashram), you can end your Ratnagiri trip by visiting the walkway at Mandvi Jetty known as Gateway of Ratnagiri. This is a half km long walkway which provides a sea view from 3 sides. 
Also, there are benches where you can sit and experience the breeze along with some mouth-watering street food and coconut water.

  • Kokam sharbat – Kokam juice is a natural drink perfect for summer as it has cooling properties
  • Ambapoli – It’s a flat delicacy made up of Mango pulp plus sugar to taste
  • Kokum – It is good for improving the digestive system. When added to food it imparts a pink to purple colour and sweet/sour taste
  • Jackfruit chips – This snack is prepared by deep-frying the half-ripe flesh of the Jackfruit.
