How to reach Shimla?

  • Rail - Nearest railway station is Kalka, from where a toy train will take you through a mountainous passage to Shimla. (check IRCTC for tickets).
  • Road - Shimla is well-connected to all North-Indian cities by road. Shared taxis (Rs 400-500 per person) & private taxis (Rs. 2500) are readily available at Kalka. The distance to Shimla is 90kms and the journey takes 4 hours to complete. Several tour operators also offer Volvo bus service between Delhi-Shimla and Chandigarh-Shimla.
    Distance between Delhi & Shimla is 350 km and between Chandigarh & Shimla is 116 km.
  • Airport - Presently, only one flight operates to Shimla, from IGI Airport, Delhi.

  • Shimla is known for a number of shrines and temples located within short distances. Some of these shrines and temples are hundreds of years old.
  • Tattapani, 54 km from Shimla, has emerged as a popular destination for adventure sports-lovers, especially those interested in river-rafting.
  • Night Market in Shimla, on locations of Ram Bazar and Lower Bazar, is a good place to spend a night shopping for everything from wooden handicrafts to trinkets.
  • The Ridge is one of the most popular destinations in this city but it is best enjoyed only either during early mornings or late nights. Rest of the time, it would be very crowded!

Day - 1 Reach Shimla, Roam around in Shimla Mall road

  • The first thing every tourist wants to do on the first day in Shimla is drop the luggage at the hotel and head to the iconic Mall Road.  One can stay at Hotel White, about a km from Mall Road, at a place called “Lakkar Bazar.”

Day - 2 Jakhu Temple, Mall Road, Viceregal Lodge Visit & explore Local food

Breakfast on Mall Road - Sita Ram & Sons – This shop is 70-years-old and it is famous for its Chana & Luchchi combo!

Jakhu temple - Shri Hanuman temple – According to Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman stopped here while on his way to get Sanjivani Booti (traditional herb). The temple is accessible by car and by ropeway. The ropeway service is available at Rs. 500 per person (Timings: 9.30 AM - 12:00 PM, 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM).

Towards the evening, you can visit any of the following locations on the Mall Road

  • The Ridge – Beautiful, open space with a two-side view of Shimla. During the evening the view of Shimla city is mesmerising from the viewpoint. One of the scenes of "3 idots" movie was shot here.
  • Christ Church - 2nd Oldest Church in North India, Built it in 1857. In the evening the illumination of the church makes it so beautiful. Located on the ridge.
  • Scandal Point – Believed to be the spot from where the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of a British Viceroy. It is located at the meeting point of Mall road & Ridge Road. There are numerous cafes & restaurants available.

Head to Naldehra - 13 km - 40 min travelling time

  • Handicraft Shopping - Gramin Bhandar Naldhera – Time to shop for some Handmade Woolens and other handicrafts available at this place. Just 2 km before the Naldehra Golf Course, on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Traditional food - There is a shop by the name Himachali Vyanjan, adjacent to Naldehra Grahmin Bhandar. They are open between 11 am to 3 pm.
  • Naldhera - Horse Ride, enjoy scenic views, and Golf course view from outside. A lot of Bollywood movies have been shot here. Visit the nearby 150-years-old Naag Devta Temple.

Travel to Tattapani - 35 km - 1 hour - Traveling time

  • The scenic view on way to Tattapani is simply awesome. The mighty Satluj flowing along the road will force you to stop more than once, just to enjoy the scenic view. 
  • River Rafting – Go for River Rafting up to 8km in Satluj River (Check with the local tour operator) (Charge - Rs 1200 per person)

Day - 4 Have breakfast & proceed to your home location

  • Have breakfast at the hotel and pack your luggage.
  • If you have to catch the evening Shatabdi from Kalka or any other train from Chandigarh, try to leave with a buffer time of 2 hours at your disposal.
  • Though you can travel to Kalka, Chandigarh or Delhi by public transport i.e., bus but the service frequency is low.

Things to Buy & Shopping

  • Shimla is known for its knick-knacks, like wooden sculptures, show-pieces, and handicrafts.
  • You can pick woollen clothes to take back home for men, women and kids.
  • The Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing & Processing Corporation (HPMC) is known for some of the most delicious juices, preserves, and other food items. Make sure to take home a couple of bottles with you.

  • Don’t miss the Himachali food experience in a village. You can explore traditional Himachali food with a family at Shamlog Village but you’ll need to schedule the meal in advance.
  • Bhatla Hill Resort - Homestay in Sadora - 12 km from Naldehra. We stayed at this homestay and booked it through MakeMyTrip. This place is about 4 km from the main road.
