  • Standing tall at 2,042 m, Darjeeling (West Bengal) is known famously as the “Queen of Hills”
  • The city is famous for its tea. Even Queen Elizabeth has marked it her favourite because of its anti-ageing and immunity building properties.
  • Darjeeling provides spectacular views of Mt. Kanchenjunga which is the third-highest mountain in the world.
  • The Ghum Railway Station of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways happens to be the highest in India. It is located at an altitude of 2,258 metres.
  • There are all different types of hotels available for accommodation from Budget to High End. Just make sure, you book rooms before travelling.

How to reach Darjeeling?

Darjeeling is one of the favourite hills stations in India and thousands of local and international tourists visit every year. Reaching the city is very easy and smooth. Let’s check out the various ways.

  • Railhead – The closest station to Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri[A3]  (71.4 km) which is also the connecting station to many major cities of the country. Upon reaching the station, one can take a private taxi (Rs 2500) or a Shared Taxi (Rs 200 to 300) to the city. There are also buses which take you to the hill station.
  • Airport – The closest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra, which is approximately 67 km [A2] away from the city. One can get direct flights to the place and upon reaching they can avail themselves of a taxi to Darjeeling. Private Taxi cost around – Rs 3000 // Shared Taxi – Rs 400 to 500.  You can go to Siliguri, from there you can take the bus – Rs 100. Taxi Travel Time – 2 to 3 hours.
  • Another option – Travel in Toy Train from New Jalpaiguri (10 am departure) to Darjeeling(Ghum station)  5 pm Arrival) (Time Duration – 7 Hour)
  • Road – Well, we have already covered how to get there via air and rail and both of them include a minor bit of road travelling. But in case you’re an adventurer, then we would definitely ask you to drive from your designated cities. If you happen to be in Kolkata, then definitely drive for 14 hours straight to the hill station. Just make sure the one who is driving knows their way around hills.

Day 1 - Tea Estate & Mall Road Visit

Lunch Options @ Chauk Bazaar

Head up to Happy Valley Tea Estate It is 3 km from Mall Road. A ten-minute cab ride will take you to the Happy Valley Tea Estate, you can see the beautiful tea garden, can enjoy the awesome views of Darjeeling. Guided tours are free of cost and take the guests around the procedure of production and packaging. It ends with a tea tasting session. (Timings – 9:30 am to 4:00 pm) The tour is 2 hours long on average.

Shri Mahakal Temple - Visit Observatory Hill View Point and pay obeisance at Shri Mahakal Temple, way to reach the temple is steeper will take about 15 minutes to walk uphill, from which you can get a pretty good peripheral view of the entire city. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva. It was established in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing.

Day 2 -Tiger Hills, Batasia Loop, Darjeeling Zoo Visit & Local Food

Wake up early and reach Tiger Hills around 4.15 am to see the sunrise out of Mt. Kanchenjunga.

  • YigaChoeling Monastery (Old Ghoom Monastery) was built in 1850 and is also the oldest Tibetan Monastery. During April you get to see Rhododendrons bloom.
  • Batasia Loop is a beautiful park that has a spiral railway created to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in Darjeeling.
  • The Druk Sangag Choling Monastery (3 km from the city; 9minutes) which is also known as the Dali Monastery, was built in 1971. The archway of the monastery is a splendid sight. To reach the prayer hall one needs to climb a steep flight of stairs.

Toy Train Ride (optional) –  You may go for a joy ride by the heritage toy train. This may be booked in advance through normal IRCTC booking. Select the Joyride steam engine ride (not diesel), which is more exciting.  This is a 2-hour ride, to and fro between Darjeeling and Ghum, including a halt at Ghum station, where you can see a small railway museum. (Travel Distance – 8 km)
The option is for those people, who want to take a toy train ride, this can be skipped, you can explore another sightseeing tour of Darjeeling.

You may proceed for 5 points sightseeing spots of Darjeeling  3 km from Glenary’s bakery.

  • The Darjeeling Zoo (Opening Hours – 8:30 AM-4:30 PM during the summer seasons & 8:30 AM-4:00 PM during the winter season. Remains closed on Thursdays) is the only one in the country which is internationally recognized for its conservation breeding programs of Snow Leopards, Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf, and other endangered species.
  • The HMI Museum (Closed on Tuesdays. 9:00 AM-1:00 PM & 2:00 PM-4:00 PM)  is the oldest mountaineering museum in the country which was established by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957.
  • The Bengal Natural History Museum – Located on the premises of the zoo, the museum is dedicated to Himalayan fauna. Although the museum contains preserved animals and insects of all sorts, the main attraction is the collection of birds and bird eggs. The museum timings are 8 am to 7:30 pm. There is no separate charge for visiting.
  • Ropeway – Ticket -Rs 200 per person Timing – 11 am to 4 pm (journey time -20 minutes)  (you get a view of Tea Garden, city view & if the weather is clear, you can also see the Kanchenjunga peak.

Lunch Options

  • The Penang Restaurant is located at Laden La road to try out their authentic Nepali Thali which comes in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
  • Sholo Ana Bangali: Famous Bengali cuisine chain has an outlet in Darjeeling too.

St. Paul’s College (famous for shooting films like Main Hoon Naa / Barfi). (5 km from Darjeeling Rangeet Valley ropeway) (2 km from Penang Restaurant).

Rock Garden – This is a must-visit spot, surrounded by greenery, flower garden, sitting area, where you can relax enjoy the beauty of nature, it also has a natural beautiful waterfall, well-maintained garden, you will need to climb upstairs to reach the top. (10 km from Darjeeling, the way to the rock garden is steeper, you might need to hire a local driver to reach this garden.

Go shopping at the Chowrasta Mall area for souvenirs, tea, Tibetan and Buddhist items. If you are a book lover, visit the Oxford Book and Stationery Co. The shops usually stay open till 8 PM.

Finally, head to dinner at Noryang Tibetan Kitchen – a newly opened homely restaurant, where they prepare everything fresh and right in front of you.

Day 3 - Departure from Darjeeling, NJP or Bagdogra

Grab some breakfast at Keventers to grab a full British breakfast experience with a view of the grand Mt. Kanchenjunga. After that, you may check out from your hotel and proceed to NJP.

You can take the route of Mirik Lake and get some last moment sightseeing done at the Simana View Point, shop at the Simana Bazaar at the Pashupati Market located near the Nepal Border (FYI you need valid I.D. to enter the place).

Proceed to visit the Sumendu Lake to do some boating and grab from Bengali food and finally head to NJP or Bagdogra.

Things to Buy/Shopping

  • Handmade items such as Cloth paintings, Tibetan Masks, traditional boots, Khukri(Gurkha knives), Pashminas, Scarves, Local jewellery, Hats.
  • To take a part of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways, one can buy miniature toy train models, merchandise such as t-shirts, wine glasses, pens, caps, and beer mugs.
  • Darjeeling Tea is a must buy, recommended purchases are – Chamomile, pure Darjeeling Tea. Head to Golden Tips, they will show you a wide range of exotic tea to choose from.
  • Authentic Happy Valley Tea from the store located inside the Happy Valley Tea Estate Factory.
  • Travel Books from the book shops.
  • Traditional Buddhist flags, dream catchers, local wooden handmade toys, ear muffs from hawker stalls.
  • To be honest, the best time to visit the hill station is throughout the year. But the main season is from April to June because the temperature is pleasant between 16-25 ℃ and is the most pleasant time to visit. But if you’re feeling festive then definitely visit during Christmas and New Year but beware of the crowd. 

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • Being a hill station, travelling around the city will be laborious. Make sure you carry comfortable shoes.
  • Darjeeling is a hill station where there are serious issues of electricity and water scarcity. So before you book a hotel that is on the higher end to avoid any shortcoming during your tour.
  • The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station has toy trains that can give you an 8-hour journey from Darjeeling to Siliguri.
  • If you have any elderly travelling with you and you want to stay near the Chowrasta, try booking hotels which are slightly downhill, near the market.
  • Uber and Ola don’t work in Darjeeling. You must learn to negotiate with the local taxis of the hill station and depend on them for travelling and you may also get a package deal with them for 2-3 days.
  • Keep warm clothes with you at all times.
  • Buy items directly from shops because sometimes some places near the tea gardens might not have good items.
  • If you are a budget traveller, we may suggest you find shared rides from Siliguri. You may also avail buses from the Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand which is near the SGUJ Station.

  • NamthingPokhari Lake which is located in Latpanchar, this lake is situated at 4000ft above sea level. Home to the endangered Himalayan Salamander, the lake and the area is worth exploring due to the rich presence of various Himalayan birds, butterflies and flora. (35 km from Glenary’s)
