  • Mahabaleshwar is a small picturesque town located in the Sahyadri Mountains in Maharashtra. It was developed as a hill station by the British owing to its cool climate. At one point, it also functioned as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency during British rule. 
  • It is the source of the river Krishna which flows across Maharashtra and southern India. The temple from which it originates is also a pilgrimage centre.
  • Mahabaleshwar is also an important historical site as it is near Pratapgad fort which occupies an important position in Maratha history.
  • Home to many waterfalls in the monsoon season.
  • Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani can be said to be twin hill stations. If you would like to stay in the market area then Mahabaleshwar is a fine place to stay or for the quiet and serene environment, Panchgani is a better choice. 
  • The best time to visit the town is in the winter, from November to February where the temperatures can drop to 5° C. However the town remains a favorite weekend getaway place in all seasons owing to its cool weather throughout the year. 

How to Reach Mahabaleshwar?

  • Railhead - The nearest railway station is Satara, which is around 60kms from Mahabaleshwar. From Satara to Mahabaleshwar one has to complete the journey via bus or car.
  • By road - Mahabaleshwar is off NH 48 via Wai. It is around 120 kms from Pune and 260 kms from Mumbai. Private and Public buses are available from Mumbai, Pune, Satara and Wai. The bus stand is located in the centre of Mahabaleshwar at the start of the market area.
  • Airport - The nearest airports are Pune International Airport at 130 kms and CSMIA in Mumbai at 270kms.

Highlights

  • Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are exceptionally famous for cultivating strawberries and strawberry ice cream and milkshakes are absolute must-haves here.
  • Venna lake is surrounded by small hills and forests and makes a good spot for boating. 
  • Lingmala waterfall in the monsoon is a breathtaking sight with its full force of water dropping down from a height of 600 feet.
  • Mapro garden is a must-visit when in Mahabaleshwar. The strawberry cream, sandwiches and pizzas are classics.

Day - 1 Arrive & Local sightseeing in Mahabaleshwar

Arrive at the accommodation in the morning. Some budget hotels are located near the market area while the luxurious ones are further away.

Go to Arthur’s seat point, which is a viewing deck on a mountain cliff. Mahabaleshwar is known for its viewing points and all of them are worth visiting. 

  • On the way back from Arthur’s Point, you can stop at Elphinstone Point. There are good views of the mountains from here.

Old Mahabaleshwar is located near Elphinstone Point on the way back to the market. There are a number of temples here which you can visit.

  • Mahabaleshwar Temple - It is a part of the 3 temples of Old Mahabaleshwar and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Panchganga Temple - It is believed that the waters of 5 rivers mix here underground, hence the name Panchganga.
  • Krishnabai Temple - This temple is built over the source of the river Krishna and it is channelled through a spout in the shape of a cow.
  • After visiting Old Mahabaleshwar stop for lunch.

Lunch Options

  • Mapro Garden - Iconic Mahabaleshwar food outlet since 1959. The restaurant is famous for its sandwiches, pizzas and strawberry based desserts. You may also buy fruit crushes, syrups and jams here. Try to go before lunch.
  • JK Garden Restaurant - North Indian, Chinese food.

After lunch, head over to Venna lake in the late afternoon for boating or games near the lakeside. (Timings 8 AM to 8 PM)

  • You can go to Wilson Point for sunset views or if not have dinner near Venna Lake.

Day-2 Local sightseeing

If you did not see the sunset the previous day you can go to Wilson point to see the sunrise. It is one of the few places in Mahabaleshwar where you can see both sunset and sunrise clearly.

Breakfast Options

Go to Pratapgad fort after breakfast. It is around 20 kms from the market area but can take around 40 mins due to winding roads.  There is a short climb after the parking area to reach the fort. There are ruins of the Shivaji Maharaj era buildings on top and you can hire a guide at the parking area to tell you stories about the place. The entire visit takes around 2-3 hours.

  • After coming down there are a number of places to have lunch.

Lunch Options 

After lunch goes to Panchgani, a distance of about 18 kms from the market and explore the Rajapuri Caves there. They are small connected caves that also have some water tanks which are considered to be holy.

    • (Timings 6 AM to 6 PM). There is a temple of Lord Kartikeya in its vicinity.

For spending time in the evening and watching the sunset you can go to Tableland in Panchgani. Tableland is a plateau and is one of the largest and highest plateaus in India.

  • There are various activities here such as horse riding, horse cart rides etc. There are some caves here which have small cafes inside them. One such place is the Tiger Cave. You can have evening snacks here. Enjoy the sunset from Tableland.
  • After sunset, you can go to the market area for shopping and dinner.

Shopping - 

  • You may explore the market area (Dr Sabne Road) in Mahabaleshwar to shop for local handicrafts.
  • You can also buy Mapro products such as strawberry jam, fruit syrups, fruit crushes and candies here. 
  • Buy Chikki at Wilson’s Chikki place
  • There are a number of cafes, eateries and restaurants along the market road.

Day 3 sightseeing & return

You can start your day by visiting the Chinaman Waterfall. It is near the market area and in the monsoons, it is in full force. 

  • After visiting the falls you can have breakfast in the market area. 

Breakfast Options - 

  • JP Food Corner - All kinds of cuisines are available here. The breakfast menu is limited but good.
  • Cafe Peter - Famous chain of cafes in Maharashtra. They have good continental and Asian food here.

After breakfast and checking out of the accommodation you can go to a village called Bhilar. It is near Panchgani and is famous as a hub for literature.

  • The village has many libraries and hosts a number of literary festivals. The village has been decorated and art plays a significant role in its public sphere. 

There are 2-3 viewing points near Panchgani, namely Parsi Point and Sydney Point. You can stop here if you are going back home via the Panchgani/Wai route.

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • There are many points in Mahabaleshwar from where you can get good views of the mountains. Some other good viewing points are Kates Point and Helen Point. The best period to witness the best views are just after the monsoons when the mountains are still green, but the sky is clear allowing you to see further.
  • There is a small art school called Devrai Art Village in Panchgani. They have small courses for art and one of their special crafts is making sculptures by fusing metal and rock. You can buy some souvenirs at their shop.
  • You can also stay in Panchgani which has many boutique hotels also.
  • There are many other waterfalls such as Lingmala and Dhobi, located in the Mahabaleshwar area, within 10 kms of the market, which are also worth visiting.
