  • Meghalaya, literally meaning 'abode of clouds' is a North-Eastern state of India.
  • Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya is commonly referred to as “The Scotland of East” for the stunning views of the Himalayan ranges that the place offers.
  • Mausynram village in Meghalaya is the wettest place in the world. It has overtaken the mantle from Cherrapunjee (AKA Sohra), which is also in Meghalaya. Monsoon is thus a major attraction for tourists. The imposing waterfalls of the state are best experienced in the monsoons.
  • The state is characterised by three parts: Khasi, Jaintia and Garo, each having distinctive tribal culture, landscape and cuisine.
  • The Meghalayan cuisine involves non-vegetarian food. Some of the notable dishes of the state are - Doh-Khlieh, Nakham Bitchi, Pumaloi, Doh-Neiiong and Tungrymbai.

  • Best Time to travel – Unlike Hill stations where travel is not advisable in Monsoon, Meghalaya is best enjoyed in the monsoon season, between May & August. Winters get chilly cold, but there is no snowfall. The crystal-clear water of the Dawki River is best enjoyed between November and February.

How to Reach Shillong?

  • Guwahati, the capital city of the Neighbouring state of Assam serves as the gateway to the North-Eastern states of India. Shillong is well connected to Guwahati by NH40.
  • Airport– Umroi airport, located 35 km from Shillong is the only airport in Meghalaya. Managed by the Army, only a limited number of flights from Kolkata connect to this airport. The nearest airport Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, located 100 km from Shillong serves as the more popular choice for air travel.
  • Railhead – The state of Meghalaya has no railway connectivity. The nearest railway station is Guwahati Junction.
  • Taxi – Taxis, both shared and private, are available from Guwahati to travel to Shillong. While the shared cabs would cost Rs.400-500 per head, private taxis would cost Rs 2000 (non-AC) and Rs. 2500 (AC).
  • Bus – Buses are available from Paltan Bazar in Guwahati.

Itinerary

Day 1 Reach Shillong (via Guwahati)

It takes about three hours to reach Shillong from Guwahati. Cabs are available from both the Guwahati Airport and the Railway station.

Umium Lake is a major tourist attraction on this route (105 km from Guwahati Airport / 20 km from Umroi Airport). Tourists halt at the viewpoint (20 km prior to entering Shillong city) to enjoy the awesome view of the lake. Tourists may enjoy a speedboat ride in the lake. There are hotels beside the lake also. Day 2 Shillong to Sohra (55 km)

After having breakfast at the Hotel get ready for a destination for the day is Sohra (Cherrapunji). Tourists must start their journey by 6:30 am because after 7.30 am, vehicular movement is slowed down due to heavy traffic within the city.

Halt at Shillong peak, which is about 16 km from Police Bazar. At over 6000 feet above sea level, this is the highest point in the city. Enjoy the panoramic view of the city.

Visit the Elephant Falls, which is 5 km from Shillong Peak. This is a two-tier waterfall. From the entrance, there is a flight of stairs to navigate each level of the fall. The first and second levels are facilitated with benches to rest and relax.

Halt at Mawkdok Dympep Valley viewpoint (20 km from the Elephant Falls). It offers a scenic view of the valley and the dense forest. Descend the flight of stairs from beside the bridge on the road to enjoy a beautiful waterfall.

Stopover at Orange Roots (a purely vegetarian restaurant) for lunch. This is a decent and hygienic restaurant located on the highway, 20 km from Mawkdok Dympep. The balcony also offers beautiful views of the valley.

Dainthlen Falls –About 5 km from the Orange Roots restaurant, this is a gorgeous waterfall with a drop of 80mt. The unique aspect of this waterfall is that tourists can watch it right from the point where it starts, instead of standing below and looking up.

Nohkalikai Falls – This is the tallest plunge waterfall of India, located 6 km from the Orange Roots restaurant. The pool into which the water falls has an unusual shade of green. The viewpoint is so far from the waterfall that a pair of binoculars would be required to fully enjoy the sight.

Seven Sisters Falls – About 11 km from the Nohkalikai Falls, is the Nohsngithiang Falls. This seven-segmented waterfall plunging a height of 315mt represents the seven North-Eastern states of India.

Mawsmai Caves – This is a network of limestone caves. The wet walls of the caves, the narrow passage at few places and fossils on the stalactites across the interiors make this an adventurous trip. The caves are located within 5 km of Seven Sisters Falls.

Day 3 Double Decker Living Root Bridge & Waterfalls visit

After breakfast at the hotel, leave early for your first destination for the day is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. 

Nongriat is a village in the East Khasi Hills known for the living root bridges, developed indigenously by the Khasi tribes. Crafted by intertwining and weaving together the aerial roots of rubber trees on opposite sides of a stream, this is an astonishing alternative to wooden bridges.

Tourists need to walk down 3500 steps to reach the bridge. This tiring downward trek takes almost three hours. It could take more time to return back.
Few tourists enjoy a bath in the crystal clear water of the lake under the bridge.

Rainbow Falls – Rainbow falls is another beautiful waterfall that few tourists trek to. It takes another four hours for the roundtrip journey from the double-decker bridge. One must estimate the time properly and start accordingly in order to visit the spot and return to Sohra the same day. Also, the trek can be difficult if one is not used to trekking.

Day 4 Sohra to Dawki (85 km)

After an early breakfast at the hotel, proceed towards Dawki (99 km from Sohra).

  • Dawki is a small town on India’s border with Bangladesh. The town is also home to the famous Umngot or Dawki river, made famous by Instagram posts of boats that seem to float in the air. Actually, the water is so clear in the winters that the riverbed is clearly visible. Boating in this river is a unique experience. Boating charges are approximately Rs.700 for a 45-minute ride.

Visit Mawlynnong (35 km from Dawki). This village is popularly referred to as Asia's cleanest village.

The unique aspect of this village is the extreme sense of hygiene and cleanliness amongst the villagers.

  • Balancing Rock – This is basically a huge boulder, balanced on top of a small rock.
  • Take a walk around the village, and visit the Bangladesh viewpoint. This is a high platform built within private property, offering a magnificent view of the lavish plains of Bangladesh. The entry ticket is Rs. 20 per person. A pair of binoculars would help enjoy the view.
  • There is another living root bridge about 2 km away, though not as grand as the Double-Decker Living Root Bridge.

Post-lunch, return to Shillong. This is an 80 km journey.

Overnight stay at Shillong. One can stay at the Aura Cottage homestay located about a kilometre from the Police Bazar. The average tariff is Rs. 2300.

Day 5 Local Sightseeing at Shillong

Start the day with breakfast at Delhi Misthan Bhandar in Police Bazar. Established in 1933, this restaurant serves delicious Poori-Bhaji & Malpua / Halwa / Jalebi.

Visit Laitlum Grand Canyon – located around 25 km from Police Bazar, this place has magnificent views of the valley. During monsoons, travellers feel clouds within arm’s reach at this destination.

Once in Guwahati, a religious traveller may visit the Kamakhya Temple, which is one of the 51 Shakti-Peeth. Located 20 kms from Guwahati airport, this is a cardinal hotspot of Hindu pilgrimage. The temple does not allow pilgrims to enter the shrine between 1pm and 2:30 pm.

  • When in Sohra, you might like to visit Arwah caves too. These caves are also limestone caves but wider compared to the Mawsmai caves.
  • Mawphlang Sacred Forest - In case you drop any location from your Shillong itinerary, you may add this place. This trip must be accompanied by a guide. A proper tour takes around a couple of hours.
  • Mawphanlur - This is a beautiful hamlet nestled in the West Khasi Hills, about 95 kms from Shillong. This place, dotted with gorgeous ponds and lush green landscape, may also be visited if the traveller has time.
