  • Garo Hills is a relatively unexplored region of the northeast but it is a perfect destination for adventure lovers.
  • Garo Hills is one of the three main regions of Meghalaya, the other two being Khasi Hills & Jaintia Hills.
  • The Tura Peak, 5 km from Tura town, is one of the main tourist spots. It towers above a lush-green tropical forest. You can choose to trek uphill to the peak. It will be a 1.5 hours' long climb.
  • The forest is home to the beautiful Rengsangrap Falls, the historic Cinchona trees, and vibrant wildlife.
  • Exploring this natural habitat is going to be an unforgettable experience.

How to reach Tura?

  • Garo Hills in Meghalaya is not connected through an airline or railway station. The nearest railway station and airport is 220 km away in Guwahati (Assam).
  • Two Routes – If you are in Guwahati and your purpose is to travel in Garo hills, only then should you directly travel to Tura (without going to Shillong). You can travel to Tura directly from Guwahati (220 km) or from Shillong (315 km). In the case of the latter, you will get to travel through Nongstoin. 
  • By Taxi – You can hire a shared taxi, at Rs 500 per person from the Bharalumukh Gate No. 8 of Guwahati Railway Station. Shared taxi service is available between 6:30 am & 1:30 pm.
  • By Bus – You can board a bus from ISBT, Guwahati daily at 9 pm (Ticket price – Rs 350 per person). It will drop you next morning in Tura at around 3:30 am or 04:00 am.
  • By Helicopter – This service is available from Guwahati to Tura at 10:30 am (Monday, Wednesday & Friday). For booking a ticket, you can call   9859021473 (Gokul) for any query.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Travel from Guwahati to Tura

It will take about 6-7 hours to cover the 220 km between Guwahati and Tura. Once you cross Guwahati, you will notice that the traffic is negligible and the road condition is really good.

  • Lunch option – Hotel Kapa – This hotel will come on your left at a place called Bajengdoba, 150 km from Guwahati, and it serves authentic Garo food.

Day 2 - Local Sightseeing in & around Tura

After breakfast at the homestay or guest house, you shall leave for the first stop of your day.

  • Pelga Falls – These falls are 7 km from Tura. You will be able to hear the water falling at a great speed even before you see this waterfall.

  • Hoolock Gibbon Rescue Centre – This place, also known as Sonja Wildlife Rescue Centre, is home to the Western Hoolock Gibbons, who is India’s only surviving ape species. These animals are treated for their injuries, etc, and then sent back to the forest. It is 40 km from Tura, in Silsotchigre and it is open every day till 3 pm.
  • Wachi Wari Fish Sanctuary – This is one of the many fish sanctuaries of Meghalaya, which are safe havens for a vast variety of fishes. Wachi Wari is home to Chocolate Mahseer fish, which have found relief here from decades of pollution and environmental contamination. You can halt here and feed the fish. 3 km from Gibbon Centre.

Daribokgre – This place is 7-8 degrees colder than Tura and a jeep is the best option to travel to this mountaintop location. During monsoon, the road can be slippery, so be careful if visiting during rains. This place is a popular camping spot for tourists as well as locals.

Camping – You can stay at Daribokgre by renting a tent or a room at a homestay. The price range for accommodation starts at Rs 800 & goes up to Rs 1200 per night. You can also carry your own tent.

Day 3 - Travel to Balpakram via Baghmara - 150 kms - South Garo Hills

  • After an early breakfast at your homestay/hotel, you will leave for Balpakram National Park.
    This national park is located about 167 km from Tura at about 3000 feet above sea level. The word Balpakram literally means “the land of perpetual winds” and this is proved in its pristine beauty. The deep gorge at this national park is often compared to America’s Grand Canyon.
  • You can hire a shared jeep to travel to Balpakram from Tura. However, there are no fixed timings and the frequency of jeeps is also very low.

You can choose to stay overnight at Balpakram at the Tourist Lodge.

Day 4 - Explore Balpakram national park

  • After a peaceful night stay in the lap of nature, the next day can be spent exploring this relatively less-known place, which is home to a virgin forest territory.
  • One of the unique aspects of this place is that it shares its border with Bangladesh.
  • The national park is home to several endangered species of plants and animals. These include Golden Cat, Barking Deer, Wild Water Buffalo, Red Panda, and 8 different species of cats (like Tiger & Marbled Cat).
  • Spend the second night at Tourist Lodge, Balpakram.

Day 5 - Balpakram national park to Siju Caves (Via Baghmara), Night stay at Tura.

Get a headstart on your day by getting an early breakfast and then proceeding for Siju Caves – 120 km from Tura & 20 km from Balpakram. 

  • Siju caves are popular as Bat Caves, this remarkable tourist attraction catches your attention at the first glimpse. Being the longest cave on the Indian subcontinent, Siju Caves needs a lot of time to explore. Having said that, a large portion of this cave remains unseen to the human eye.
  • You will need to keep a guide with you, along with the following items – torch with extra battery power, extra pair of shoes and clothes.

After exploring the caves, proceed to Tura.

Hawakhana – If you want to enjoy some really cool breeze in Tura, head to the Hawakhana, located about 12 km from Pelga Falls towards Tura.

  • Dinner – Platters – This is a decent restaurant serving traditional Garo food – both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. This restaurant is located just opposite Hawakhana.

Day 6 - Travel to Guwahati - 220 km.

You can start early from Tura for Guwahati.

  • In Guwahati, you can visit the world-famous Kamakhya Temple, about 20 km from Guwahati city and 8 km from the railway station.
  • After paying obeisance at the Temple, proceed to Guwahati Airport / Railway station.

Things to Buy/Popular shopping Location

  • Tura is a relatively lesser-travelled destination in the region. Therefore, there is nothing specific to buy from a tourist point of view.
  • However, when you visit local villages, like the Chandigre resort, keep your eyes open for anything that might catch your eye.
  • On your return to Guwahati, if you have spare time, you can travel to Fancy Bazar or Paltan Bazar, as these are two popular shopping markets of Guwahati. Fancy Bazar is about 2 km and Paltan Bazar is less than a kilometer from Guwahati Railway Station, respectively.

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • In Meghalaya, the sun rises and sets earlier than elsewhere. Therefore, in order to do more during the day, you need to make an early start in the morning.
  • Even if you don’t have much time at your disposal, it is extremely necessary to start your day early because the road conditions are not uniformly good. Also completely avoid traveling after sunset.
