  • The word "Mahad" is derived from the Konkani-Marathi words Maha (meaning great or big) and Haat (meaning market). In the olden days, the town was a popular marketplace.
  • The oldest reference of Mahad is found in historical documents in 225 BC. Around 130 AD, Mahad was under the rule of Buddhist King Vishnu Pulit of the Kambhoja Dynasty. 
  • Historically, the city had a close association with Raigad fort, the capital of the Maratha Empire in Shivaji Maharaj's era.
  • Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar launched the revolutionary Mahad Satyagraha at Chavdar Tale, in the wake of Modern India.

This place is well known to maintain its taste since they started the shop. The taste of misal at this shop has a special place in the heart of Mahadkars.

Shree Vireshwar Maharaj Mandir: This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the gram daiwat (patron deity) of Mahad. It is located within walking distance of the above-mentioned breakfast joint.

  • The current structure of the temple is considered to be built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  • According to popular belief among locals, there is a secret underground route, under the tortoise inside the temple, which connects to Raigad Fort. It is said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used this route to take the Darshan of Lord Shiva.
  • During Mahashivratri there is a huge celebration here, whereby people from Mahad and nearby villages visit to celebrate the festival and enjoy the Chabina (fair).
  • There is a lake just in front of the temple, you may do some photography near the lake.

Chavdar Tale: This lake is located in the heart of the town. This was the main source of drinking water for the entire town in olden times. It is located within walking distance of the temple.

This is the place where Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar launched the water satyagraha after which people from the Dalit community were allowed to drink and use the water from the lake.

Gandhar Pale Caves (also known as Pandav Leni): Located at a 2.5 km distance from Chavdar Tale.

  • There are 30 Buddhist caves here. Buddhist King Vishnu Pulit built these caves during his regime.
  • There is a shrine that has a sculpture of Buddha, with a wheel and deer beneath in Cave #1. The verandah in front is 53 feet long and 8 feet wide. 
  • Caves are located on the Mumbai Goa highway. There is a staircase carved out of stone that takes one to the top of the hill and offers a panoramic view of the neighborhood.

Sav Hot Water Spring: This village is located at 5 km distance from the caves.

One needs to cross the Savitri river by boat to visit the hot spring. Earlier there were a lot of hot spring ponds here, however, as per time the number of ponds decreased.

Come back to the town to have lunch at any of the below eateries.

Shivthar Ghal: Second half of the day you can visit this temple, Located at a 34 km distance from Mahad, this place is also called Sundarmath (beautiful monastery). This cave is located in Varandha Ghat in the Sahyadris on the Bhor - Mahad road.

  • It is believed that this is where the first meeting between Maratha king Shivaji and Samarth Ramdas took place.
  • Every day visitors can have the prasad consisting of Moong Dal Khichadi and Shira between 12:00 noon and 1:30 pm.
