  • Sawantwadi is a nodal town, spread over 133 sq. km., from where one can go towards Mumbai, Goa, Belgaum, and the Konkan coast.

  • November to February is a good time as the climate is pleasant.
  • You can also plan to visit Sawantwadi during the Ganesh Festival, which is celebrated with pomp and vigor throughout the Konkan belt during August/September period.

  • Ganjifa, the royal game of playing cards which was a part of Mughal regime, is still alive in Sawantwadi.

How to reach Sawantwadi?

  • Railhead: The nearest railway station is Sawantwadi Road, around 8 km from the town. Alternatively, one can get down at Kudal around 24 km (more trains stop here).
  • By road: State transport buses, as well as private transport buses, connect Sawantwadi town with the major cities of Maharashtra.
  • While traveling on your vehicle take the route via Nipani -  Amboli on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway from Mumbai / Pune / Kolhapur.
  • Airport: The nearest airport is at Dabolim, Goa (around 85 km) A new airport has been constructed at Chipi (Sindhudurg district around 50 km), however, currently, only Alliance Air operates flights from Mumbai. 
  • Local Travel: Rickshaws are available for going from one tourist location to the other, as well as nearby towns. However, they would not operate on a meter, and you will have to fix the fare before boarding the rickshaw.

Start your day with breakfast at any of the below eateries.

  • Anand Bhuvan: Well known eatery for Usal Pav / Wada Chutney.
  • Chandu Bhuvan: Well known for Kanda Bhajji (Onion Fritters).
  • After breakfast, start the sightseeing tour of the town.
  • Moti Talao: Constructed in the year 1874 right in the center of the town.
  • The lake is considered the pride of Sawantwadi. The view of architectural buildings like the Palace, Town Hall, Old market, etc. across the lake is worth watching.
  • While taking a stroll around the lake enjoy a cocktail (ice cream with milk) from Balkrishna Cold Drink House or Lassi from Prasad Cold Drink House.

Royal Palace: The palace was built over 300 years ago by Khem Sawant Bhosle and the family also participated in the uprising of 1857.

  • Location of Palace - Next to the lake
  • Timings - 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. 
  • There is an entrance fee and a guided tour of the palace, which includes a small museum. One can also see artists painting Ganjifa cards and other paintings. 
  • One can spend an hour or so at the palace, locally called- Rajwada.
  • A Premium Heritage hotel is being developed inside the palace with limited room accommodation.

Lunch can be explored at any of the below restaurants.

  • Arekar's Tanay Family Restaurant: This eatery is famous for its Thali. It is located in Arekar Colony. 
  • Chaitanya Hotel: This eatery is famous for Solkadhi and Paan Ice Cream. It is located at Sabniswada.
  • Bhalekar Khanaval: This eatery is famous for its Malvani fish preparation. It is located at Sabniswada.
  • Sadhle Mess: This is a pure vegetarian hotel famous for its Thali’s. It is located near the palace.
Note: A number of restaurants dot the lake so there are multiple options to choose from.

After lunch, you can consider the below sightseeing options.

  • Shri Dev Uparalkar Devasthan: This shrine is known as the owner and protector of the 365 villages, located at about one km distance from the town.
  • Locals believe this to be a wish-fulfilling deity and on Wednesdays and Sundays, they sacrifice a chicken after their wishes are fulfilled.
  • You can see this shrine either on the way to Madkhol Dam or on the way back.

Madkhol Dam: This is a good picnic spot located at a 7 km distance from the town.

  • One can see a good view of the backwaters here and is one of the offbeat places. This place is crowded during weekends.

Narendra Dongar: A serene place near the town center located at a distance of 8 km from the dam.

  • Just before the entrance to the garden at the top of the hill visit the Hanuman temple. One has to walk around 300 meters after parking the vehicle to reach the temple.
  • After visiting the temple, start the trek to reach the garden at the top of the hill from where you can have a birds-eye view of the town. 
  • The trek is around 3 km one way passing through a thick forest on both sides. If one is lucky you can see the Giant Malabar Squirrel. This is also a good place for bird sightings.

Shree Vitthal Mandir: This temple is visible from anywhere in the town due to its tall Kalash (temple tower), located a distance of 1 km from the garden.

  • There are quite a few smaller temples inside the premises. After the darshan when you take a Pradakshina (around the main holy statues) you will see Lord Vishu's Dashavatar statues, Radha Krishna and Sita Ram statues, etc.

After the temple visit, walk around 300 meters towards the town center for snacks/street food. Recommended eateries are: 

  • Hotel Vijay: Well known for Samosa and Misal Pav. It is located in Ubha Bazar.
  • Hotel Bharatmata: well known for Amboli Usal and Kurma Pav. It is located near Gandhi Chowk.
  • Spend the evening shopping at the bazaar. Sawantwadi is famous for its wooden toys and Ganjifa playing cards. For more information on the shops see the Things to buy section.

  • There are 12 to 15  shops in Ubha Bazaar from where one can purchase the famous wooden toys. One of the well-known shops is P D Kanekar's Store near Gandhi Chowk.

  • You can visit Malvan  as a day trip from Sawantwadi- (50 km distance)
  • You can consider Sawantwadi as a pit stop on your way to Goa / Mumbai / Pune / Belgaum.
