  • Pune, the second largest city in Maharashtra has a lot to offer to anyone visiting it. Its history as the de facto capital of the Maratha Empire, its climate and its reputation for education makes it unique.
  • Its rich cultural heritage has made it earn its distinction as Maharashtra’s cultural capital.
  • Apart from being one of India’s premier education destinations, it is also known as an IT hub.
  • Pune is one of the best cities to live in India owing to its cool weather and ease of life.
  • Its lush green outskirts boasts of more than a dozen historical forts such as Sinhgad, Purandar, Lohagad which also make for good one day treks.
  • It acts as a hub to visit places like Mahabaleshwar, Lonavla, Konkan and Nashik.
  • The best time to visit is October to March but specifically if you want to trek and see the hill stations around Pune, June to September is good.
  • The Ganpati festival which starts on Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most famous festivals of Pune and the whole city is engulfed in public processions, dances and traditional dhol music. This itself is a treat worth watching. Pune is also known for its Palkhi and Shiv Jayanti processions.

How to reach?

  • Railhead - Pune is well connected to major cities of India via rail and there are 2 main railway stations.
    • Pune Station serves as a hub for trains from Mumbai to Chennai. The station is located in the heart of Pune.
    • Shivajinagar Station also serves as a hub for trains to Mumbai and Lonavala. It is in the Shivajinagar area of Pune and 2kms from the main railway station. 
  • By road - Pune is easily accessible by road as NH48 passes through it. There are 3 main bus stands in the city.
    • Pune Station Bus Stand - This bus stand located next to the Railway Station connects Pune to Hyderabad and the eastern side of Maharashtra but also has buses to Mumbai.
    • Swargate - Local Intracity (PMPML) buses ply from here. Some intercity and interstate buses start from here connecting Pune to Konkan, Mumbai and Southern India.
    • Shivajinagar (Wakdewadi) Bus Stand - State buses going to northern Maharashtra like Nashik start here. Some buses to Mumbai also.
  • Airport - Pune has an international airport in Lohegaon with connections to major Indian cities along with some international destinations. The airport is well connected to the city. It is at a distance of 10.5 kms from Shivajinagar which is the heart of the city.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Dagdusheth Mandir, Tulsibaug and Wada Visit

Arrive at the hotel in the morning. A good place to book a hotel is in the Deccan Gymkhana (Shivajinagar) area as it is centrally located.

After checking in and refreshing, head out for lunch in the Shivajinagar area.

  • Lunch options -  
    • Vaishali - South Indian restaurant
    • Shreyas - Popular for Maharashtrian Thali
    • Shabree - Known for various cuisine options.
    • Cafe Good Luck (Non Veg) - Irani cafe, popular for brunch/tea.

Stroll around J.M Road and F.C Road after lunch and if you want to, shop at the numerous brands on these roads. 

In the late afternoon, take an auto rickshaw to go to the Peth areas of Pune. This is the oldest part of the city and is filled with historical monuments, temples and traditional eateries.

  • Head over to Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir which is a prominent Ganesh Temple and start walking from there. This area is best explored on foot.
  • Go through the Tulsibaug area which is famous as a household goods shopping place. You can also visit the famous Tulsibaug Ganpati Mandir there. Try an ice cream at Kawre’s Ice Creams here. 

Make your way to the Vishrambaug wada, an erstwhile residence of the Peshwas of Pune. There is a small museum inside it showcasing Old Pune, but a quick glance through the Wada gives you an idea about the heritage of the city.

Roam around in the old city and visit Pune’s classic snack and sweet shops such as -

For dinner you can come back to Shivajinagar side to have some tasty thalis.

Tips - Make sure to have hot steaming tea at any of the numerous “Amrutulya” joints across the Peth areas. Another famous chain is “Yewale tea” which is spread throughout the city.

Day 2 - Parvati Hill, Museum Visit and explore Local Food

Start your day a bit early and have breakfast first and book a cab to go to Parvati, a hill in the center of Pune.

  • You can climb up 100 steps to the Parvati temple where there is a small Peshwa museum which has some artefacts and weapons from the Peshwa era. (Timings 7:30AM to 8PM, Ticket Cost - INR 20).
  • There is a good view of the city from here.  
  • There is a historic garden at the base of Parvati called Sarasbaug which has a lake and a Ganesh Mandir inside it. You can also visit this place if you have the time (Timings 5AM to 12PM, 4PM to 9PM)

If you have not had breakfast yet, you can have breakfast in the old city itself.

  • Breakfast options -
    • Bedekar Misal - They serve Authentic Pune style Misal and other local breakfast items.
    • Badshahi - This outlet is also famous for traditional Maharashtrian breakfast items like Thalipeeth, Pohe, Sabudana Khichdi etc.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum on Bajirao Road (Timings 10AM to 5:30PM, Ticket Cost - INR 80) - This museum has a lot of historical artefacts and houses a reconstruction of the Mastani Mahal.

You can have lunch in the Shivajinagar /Deccan area which is around 2 kms from the Museum.

    • Shivsagar on JM Road - Good for street food style lunches such as Pao Bhaji.
    • Barbeque Nation (Veg and Non Veg)

Visit the Junglee Maharaj Temple and Pataleshwar Cave Temple which is in the same premises on JM Road. The Pataleshwar temple is more than a thousand years old and offers a nice and quiet break.

Stroll around JM road and Sambhaji Garden (Timings 8:30Am to 11:30AM,4PM to 8PM)

  • In the evening go to Shaniwar Wada, the main palace of the Peshwas and see the light and sound show. (Timings 7:15PM for Marathi and 8:15PM for English, Ticket Cost - INR 25)

You can have dinner in the Peth areas.

  • Dinner options -
  • Try Mango Mastani at Sujata Mastani or Cold Drinks House both which are located in the old city (Peth) itself at a distance of not more than 1kms from both the dinner options. Sujata Mastani is a chain and can be found across the city.
  • Overnight stay at Hotel.
Tips - If time permits, you can shop on Laxmi Road for traditional/ ethnic wear. You can shop for Paithani and all kinds of sarees here. Also there are old renowned gold shops here for jewellery shopping.

Day 3 - Osho Garden, Aga Khan Palace Visit and Shopping at MG Road

Breakfast options on FC Road -

  • Wadeshwar (FC Road) - Popular place to have south indian food or chaat.
  • Joshi Wadewale (FC Road) - Known for its snack items like Batata Wada.

Osho Garden - (Timings 7-9AM and 3-6PM). This garden in the Koregaon Park area is developed along an old canal and is one of the most beautiful gardens of Pune.

  • Aga Khan Palace - This historic palace was once the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s imprisonment. (Timings 9AM to 5:30PM Ticket Cost - INR 25)
  • Visit the Camp Area - It is known for its British Architecture of Churches, Government Buildings etc., cosmopolitan vibes and diverse food.
  • You can stroll around M G Road and East Street and shop for some last minute gifts.

You can have lunch on or around M G Road.

  • Lunch options -
    • Marzorin - Try their sandwiches and macaroons.
    • George (Non Veg Food) - Good for kebabs and biryani.

  • There are a number of churches in this area and some famous ones include - St Mary’s, St Paul’s and St Patrick’s Cathedral which are all old and beautiful stone structures.
  • Head back to the hotel as per your travel arrangements. Avoid the evening traffic before 530 PM.
Tips - Have evening snacks such as tea, pastries, baked goods etc. at Dorabjees on Moledina Road where you can also shop for imported groceries and house goods. You can also have Wada Pav at Garden Wada Pav which is a 5 minute walk from Dorabjees.

  • Shani Shingnapur - 160 kms - Known for its Shani Temple and the fact that the village houses have no doors.
  • Shirdi - 180 kms - It is the home of the saint Sai Baba and has his main temple. 
  • Lonavala - 65 kms - Scenic hill station famous for its views and waterfalls.
  • Mahabaleshwar - 120 kms - Hill Station with boating, trekking and commanding views of the Western Ghats.

Suggestions and Recommendations

  • Chaturshringi is a famous historic hill temple which is located opposite the University of Pune and is also worth paying a quick visit. There is a festival here in the Navratri period.  Trishunda Ganpati Temple (built in 1754) is also worth visiting in Somwar Peth. (Timings 7AM to 9PM)
  • For nature lovers make sure to visit the P L Deshpande Garden on Sinhagad Road. It is a Japanese Style Garden (Timings 6:30AM to 10:30AM, 4PM to 8PM) or hike up the Taljai hill which is known for its abundance of peacocks.
  • Shinde Chhatri - Memorial to the 18th century leader Mahadji Shinde in Wanowrie near Camp (Timings 7:00AM to 8:00PM). If you are a history or architecture lover you can visit this place.
  • If you have an extra day in Pune then make sure to visit the Sinhagad Fort which is around 30kms away. You can take a car all the way to the top or also trek.Ideally you can spend half a day until lunch here. The pithla-bhakri and buttermilk/curd are must-haves here.
  • If you are a foodie you can also visit -
    • Vaidya Upahar Gruha (100 + year old establishment serving misal) in Budhwar Peth. Katakirr Misal in Kothrud is also another famous Misal outlet.
    • Try batata wada at Prabha Vishranti Gruha in Shaniwar Peth opposite the Kesari Wada.(Timings 8:30AM to 12:30PM, 4:30PM to 7:30PM)
    • Take back or eat fresh Bakarwadi at Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale
    • Shrewsbury Biscuits from Kayani Bakery are a Pune favorite.
    • For all kinds of Puneri sweets you can try out Kaka Halwai.
    • Supreme Corner on JM Road - Special Pav Bhaji and Tawa Pulao are famous here.
    • For authentic South Indian food you can try Anna Idli, Up South and Kerala Cafe.
