  • The capital city of Gangtok and its mall road named M G Marg, Rumtek Monastery, the Tsomgo Lake and NathuLa are the top attractions of East Sikkim.
  • Promoted as a clean and green state, Sikkim is notably one of the most popular destinations amongst these eight states.
  • Sikkim is bounded by Tibet on its north and northeast, Bhutan on its east, Nepal on its west, and West Bengal on its south.
  • Indian tourists are free from any permit to explore Sikkim. However, in order to visit Nathula Pass, Zuluk, Tsomgo Lake tourists need to get a travel permit. Foreigners need to take a tourist permit to explore Sikkim.
  • There is a limit on the number of permits issued daily for Nathula pass Tourists need to book this from a local travel agency a day or two in advance. Original photo id and address proof are necessary for the permits.
  • Best time to visit - Summer is a good time to be in Gangtok, Sikkim. The pleasant weather is best suited for sightseeing & adventure activities. During winters, major parts of Sikkim are covered in snow.

  • Although roads are not superior outside the capital city of Gangtok, traffic on the road is systematic and vehicles refrain from unnecessary honking across the state.

How to reach Gangtok?

  • AirportBagdogra Airport in West Bengal is the closest airport to Sikkim. It is around 124 Km from Gangtok. From Bagdogra, shared or private taxis are available to travel to Sikkim.
    Pakyong Greenfield Airport at 4500 ft above sea level is located 29 km from Gangtok. However, only limited flights land at this airport.
  • RailheadNew Jalpaiguri Railway station (NJP) in West Bengal is the closest major railway junction. It is 120 km from Gangtok and the journey takes around four hours.
  • By Road – The roads to Sikkim are picturesque and soothing, following the river Teesta across major parts of travel from Siliguri / NJP / Bagdogra. Sikkim also has regular state bus service.
    Shared Taxis charge between Rs.400 and Rs.500 per person to travel from NJP to Gangtok. Private taxis could charge upto Rs.4000.

Itinerary

Day - 1 Arrival in Gangtok & Explore MG marg

Assuming that you arrive at NJP / Bagdogra around morning, it will take another four to five hours to reach Gangtok.

Have lunch and explore MG Marg market in the evening. This is a shoppers’ paradise.

  • MG Marg is a hotspot for street food and dine-in. Enjoy Thukpa and delicious momos in any of the many eateries.
  • Hamro Bhansha Ghar is a restaurant famous for Thakali Thali and Nepali thali.

Day - 2 Local Sightseeing around Gangtok

After breakfast, set out on a sightseeing tour around Gangtok. Reserve a cab for a day-trip from the taxi stand near MG Marg. This would cover the major attractions within Gangtok.

Monasteries in Gangtok

  • Visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT) to acquaint oneself with Buddhism and learn more about the fascinating monasteries in the area. The institute is about 2.5 km from MG Marg.
  • Visit the Do Drul Chorten Monastery. This monastery has a stupa and 108 mini prayer wheels around it. These wheels with religious inscriptions are turned by Buddhist followers along with chants. This place is 500 mt above NIT.

Take a ride on the Gangtok Ropeway originating at Deorali Bazaar (1.5 km from NIT). The cable car offers breathtaking views of mountains and the city along the route.

  • Enchey Monastery is another small but peaceful monastery, located around 5 km from the NIT. Its sacredness is attributed to the belief that Khangchendzonga and Yabdean – the protecting deities – reside in this monastery.

Sightseeing in Gangtok

  • Visit the Banjhakari Falls, which is a beautiful waterfall sourced from mountain springs. Around 8 km from the city center, this spot has a recreation park built around the waterfall.
  • Visit the Bakthang Waterfall, which is another beautiful waterfall, around 12 km from Banjhakri. Tourists may enjoy Ziplining here.
  • Tashi Viewpoint offers sweeping views of Kanchenjungha snow peaks on a day with clear skies. The spot is 3km from Bakthang.

Flower Exhibition Centre has awesome collection of flowers. It also hosts the annual Orchid show. The spot is 8 km from Tashi Viewpoint and it stays open till 5 pm.

  • Revisit MG Marg and engage in shopping in the market.
  • In order to visit Nathula Pass on the next day, it is advisable to reserve a cab (private or shared) from any tour operator and submit documents required to obtain permission for the trip. This may be done in this evening.

Day - 3 Tsomgo / Baba Mandir / Nathu-La & local sightseeing in Gangtok

Get up early, and set out on an exciting journey. Have breakfast in the hotel or on the way. 

  • Tsomgo Lake (pronounced as Changu Lake) is a beautiful glacial lake at an altitude of 12310 feet above sea level. Around 38 km from Gangtok. The water of the lake gets completely frozen in the winters and offers spectacular views of snow capped mountains around itself. Tourists may enjoy yak-ride at this spot.
  • Baba Mandir is a wish-fulfilling temple, built by the Indian army in memory of Baba Harbhajan Singh. As per mythology, the soldier had gone missing while on duty. His body was found three days later. However, his spirit is still believed to be around, protecting the soldiers by warning them about forthcoming dangers.

This is a new temple constructed in 1982, around 20 km from Tsomgo Lake. The old Baba Mandir, built around the original bunker of the soldier, is located on the historic Silk Route, in Nathang Valley.

  • Nathu-La Pass, located at 14140 ft above sea level, is a scenic place leading to the Indo-China Border. It is 10 km from the New Baba Mandir.

Temples in Gangtok

  • Hanuman Tok is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman at 7200 ft above sea level. It is believed that Lord Hanuman had halted here for rest while he was on his way back from picking up the Sanjivani Booti (medicinal herb) to save the life of Lakshman. The temple is now maintained by the Indian Army.
  • Ganesh Tok is a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh, at 6500 ft above sea level. The place offers mesmerizing views of Mt. Kanchenjungha.

Options for dinner in Gangtok

  • Taste of Tibet is a popular Chinese restaurant in MG Marg. Thukpa, Chicken Sha phaley are famous.
  • Shekmari is another restaurant that serves Traditional Sikkimese Thali at MG Marg. Mutton and vegeterian thali are famous here.

Day 4 Return Journey

Have your breakfast at Hotel and start your journey towards New Jalpaiguri Railway station or Bagdogra Airport.

Suggestions & Recommendations

  • While travelling from NJP or Bagdogra, tourists would be dropped off at Deorali Stand if they travel in cars whose registration is not of Sikkim. Tourists would then need to hire another cab to reach their respective hotel.
  • Private taxi to Nathula pass, Changu lake & Baba Mandir could charge upto Rs. 6000 for a seven-seater car. Shared Taxis are also available at around Rs. 800 per person.
  • The day trip offered by shared jeeps does not include the Old Baba Mandir. Drivers would charge extra to travel to the spot.
  • You should ascend the stairs at Nathu-La or Old Baba Mandir slowly as    oxygen level is low at such high altitudes.
  • On the day of touring Nathu-La, tourists may have breakfast at 15th Mile, 30 km from Gangtok. This place has several eateries and stalls selling warm clothes. Restaurants may also cook lunch on order which tourists may have on the way back from Nathu-La.
  • Nathu-La is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
