  • Mangalore, locally known as Mangaluru, is a coastal city in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district. The city is nestled between the Western Ghats (more precisely the south Sahyadri mountain range) on the Eastside and the Arabian Sea on the West. River Netravati, which is the lifeline of the city, flows Southwest of the city through Dharmasthala, before it meets the Arabian Sea.
  • Mangalore is not just known for its urban landscape but also for religious and leisure destinations; also a heaven for culinary delicacies. Mangalore has a date with mythology as it is believed to have been associated with Parashurama, the legendary sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
  • Where to Stay
    • For tourists, we suggest staying in hotels closer to Hampanakatta (the central hub of the city) as it will be easier to travel to a number of tourist destinations in and around Mangalore and Dharmasthala. Udupi also is an hour's drive, around 60-70 kms from Hampankatta.
    • Out of many hotels in this area with different budgets, Hotel Ocean Pearl would cost around Rs.4,000 per night. Hotel Fab Plaza Heights, costs around Rs.2,000 per night (rates may vary depending on the season).

    • You may visit anytime throughout the year (except during the monsoon season between June and September, when the city receives heavy to very heavy rainfall). 
    • As Mangalore experiences sweltering heat due to its proximity to the sea, November to February will be the best time to visit as the weather is quite pleasant then.

How to reach?

  • Airport: Mangalore (IATA: IXE) is the nearest airport which also is the second international airport in Karnataka (after Kempegowda Airport in Bangalore) with flights from abroad and also different cities in India.
  • By bus: Well connected inter-state and intra-state bus services from KSRTC Bus-stand. Volvo bus services are available from Mangalore to Coorg, new name Kodagu (a famous hill station in Karnataka), Bengaluru (capital of Karnataka), Goa, Mumbai and even Hyderabad.
  • Railhead: The nearest railway stations Mangalore Central Railway Station and Mangalore Junction Railway Station, are very well connected by trains with the capital city Bengaluru and also from other parts of the country. (350 km from Bengaluru).

Day - 1 Visit ancient heritage sights (Milagres Church, Sultan Bathery) & Tannirbhavi Beach

Check-in at the hotel, unleash your bag. Assuming you reach Mangalore by afternoon and have the 2nd half of the day for sightseeing, one can plan the rest of the day as follows.

Sultan Bathery - (a watchtower built by Tipu Sultan), 4 km from Hampankatta.

  • Tannirbhavi beach - If travelling by road, then one can travel 13 kms (one way) from Sultan Bathery, and reach this beach; or alternatively, take a to and fro ferry service from Sultan Bathery. Take a liesure walk, enjoy seren waters and watch the beautiful sunset from this beach.

Day - 2 Kukke Subramanya Temple & Dharmasthala

Head to Kukke Subramanya temple (105 km from Mangalore). Private car rentals and buses are available to reach the place. It is advisable to leave Mangalore early in the morning, by 5 am or 6 am, so that one can visit the rest of the places comfortably.

  • Temple timings - 6:30am – 1:30pm & 3:30pm – 8pm.
  • Kukke Subramanya is the richest temple in Karnataka and one of the most visited temples by many celebrities for a number of 'dosha parihara' poojas.
  • If you plan to stay in Kukke, there are a number of lodges available and one can plan a two-day trek for Kumara Parvatha or Pushpagiri which is at an altitude of 1,712 metres above Mean Sea Level.
  • Lunch - Prasadam (Free meals) are offered at Kukke which are very delicious.
  • Depart from Kukke by 12pm so that you can reach Dharmasthala in an hour or so.

Head to Dharmasthala (53 km from the Kukke).

  • Timings 6:30 am – 2:30 pm and 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm (check timings, as they may differ).
  • Dharmasthala is the abode of deity - Dharmasthala Manjunatha form of Lord Shiva believed to be an 8th-century temple. One may need to wait for two to three hours just to get darshan.
  • After darshan, one can have langar/ prasadam (free meal) at Annaprasadam offered at Dharmasthala temple which is very delicious.

Local sightseeing within 1 km radius:

  • Lord Bahubali statue (Gomateshwara) on top of a small hillock and Dharmasthala museum. The height of the statue is around 39 feet and it's carved from a single rock.
  • Manjusha Museum - It houses a unique collection of heritage objects, artifacts, cameras & many more items which you can see in this museum, which are hundreds of years old. This is just 500 meters away from Shri Dharmasthala Temple.
    • Timing  - 09:30 am to 5:30 pm.
    • There is also a Vintage Car museum which has a total of 50 antique cars in there and all are in working condition.
    • Timings - 8:30am to 7:00 pm.
  • Elephant Shed - You can spend 10 to 15 min. here, watching 2-3 elephants.

Temples near Hampankatta

  • Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple - This is said to be the one and only temple in Karnataka, sanctified and consecrated by Brahmashree Narayana Guru in 1912. It's 2 km from Hampankatta. This temple is richly decorated during Dasara season but attracts crowds across the year.
  • Mangaladevi temple - This is one of the oldest temples in Mangalore and interestingly the city name of Mangaluru derives its name from this temple deity. (3 km from Hampankatta).
  • Kadri Manjunatha temple - This ancient temple dedicated to Lord Manjunatheshwara is located on the hills of Kadri. It is believed that the temple was built around the 10th or 11th century and the stone structure was constructed in the 14th century (5 km from Mangaladevi temple).

  • Cashew nuts - Best variety of cashews sold at many shops in and around Hampanakatta. (Phalguni Cashew Centre - It is one of the shops in Hampankatta, which has a good variety of cashews & dry fruits).

  • There are other sightseeing options, which you can club in your itinerary.
    • Padubidri beach (34 km from Hampankatta) was recently recognised as a blue flag beach and can also be visited.
    • Sasihithlu beach (24 km from Hampankatta).
    • Fish auction in the morning at Mangalore Bunder.
    • Udupi - 60 km from Mangalore.
    • If you are planning to visit Dharmasthala or Kukke, be prepared to face a huge crowd and wait for the time to enter the temple.
  • The roads to Dhamasthala and Kukke Subramanya are very scenic as you pass via the dense Western Ghats.
  • If you are in Dharmasthala - the ritual is to have a bath at Netravati river ghat before you visit the temple, though it's not compulsory.
  • While in Kukke, you can have a holy bath at the Kumaradhara river.
  • If you plan to visit the Sammilan Shetty Butterfly Park while returning from Karkala to Managlaore, then remember it closes at 5 pm; so plan your trip accordingly.

    • Yakshagana is a Folk dance in Karnataka which is performed at open-air stages in the compound of temples or at local houses. In Yakshagana, artists portray stories from Ramayana, Mahabharat, or Bhagavata Geeta. It is performed from November to April, from dusk to dawn. It is also believed that people whose vows have been successfully completed, contribute to Yakshagana artists, organize langar too.
