  • Prayagraj is one of the largest cities of Uttar Pradesh. Kumbh Mela attracts millions, with the largest gathering at the Prayagraj and the second largest at Haridwar. It has been inscribed on the UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • Situated on the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, Allahabad is one of the holiest cities for Hindu Pilgrimage.
  • Also known as Prayagraj, this is one of the four sites where Kumbha Mela is held every 12 years. Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik are the other three spots where Amrit is supposed to have spilled from the pot carrying the nectar of immortality after Samudra-Manthan.
  • Tourist places in Allahabad include temples, forts, universities and gardens.

How to reach Prayagraj?

  • Airport – The Allahabad Airport, which is 12 km from the city centre. Prominent international airports are Varanasi and Lucknow.
  • Railhead – Prayagraj Junction is one of the main railway junctions of the North Central Railway Zone.  
  • Bus – Prayagraj is well connected to Delhi, UP & Rajasthan through NH 19, NH 30 and NH 35. Buses of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and auto-rickshaws may be availed for travel within the city.

Day - 1 Visit to Triveni Sangam, Allahabad Fort & Bade Hanuman Temple

Check-in at Hotel. It is advisable to choose a hotel adjacent to Civil Lines. Suggested hotels are:

Reach the Allahabad Fort, which is the largest fort built by Mughal Emperor Akbar. The fort is now occupied by the Indian Army and only some parts of the fort are open to travellers.
The fort is also the supposed location of Akshayavat, the immortal banyan tree. It is a holy tree near the Patalpuri Temple at the Allahabad Fort. Patalpuri Temple is a beautifully carved underground temple that houses beautiful idols of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Proceed to the main attraction of Prayagraj, The Triveni Sangam. This is the holy confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Boats are available at the bank of the Ganga River near the fort for a to-and-fro ride of the Sangam. Generally, they charge between Rs.250 and Rs.500 for a round trip that could take 2 hours’ time.

Visit Shri Bade Hanuman Ji Temple beside the Fort, after taking a dip in the Sangam. The temple houses a 20-ft idol of Lord Hanuman in a reclining position in the basement. Interestingly, the river water floods the basement and bathes the idol during high tides.

Day - 2 Visit to Anand Bhawan & Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park

Visit Anand Bhawan which was the ancestral home of the Nehru family. Named Swaraj Bhavan, it served as the headquarters of the Indian National Congress during British rule. This historical mansion is now a museum. Located 5 km from the Chowk area, It takes about an hour to take a complete tour of the place.

  • Hari Ram & Sons – Established in 1890, this shop is famous for its delicious snacks. Tourists must try samosa, kachori with aloo stuffing and Spinach pakora.
  • Rajaram Lassi Wale – This 125-year-old shop serves lassi in big kulhad (earthen-cups) with a thick topping of malai & rabri. The shop is right opposite Hari Ram & Sons.

Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park (Alfred Park) – The park was built to mark Prince Alfred’s visit to Allahabad. The park has an imposing white marble canopy dedicated to Queen Victoria. This is also the place where Chandra Shekhar Azad had shot himself when British Police had surrounded him since he had pledged to never get captured by the British. Commemorating his martyrdom, Alfred Park was named Chandra Sekhar Azad Park.

Lalita Devi Temple - Considered as one of the 52 Shakti Peeth, this is a prominent spot of pilgrimage in Prayagraj.
Spend time in Civil lines – This is the marketplace of Prayagraj city. Tourists may enjoy street food in the area.

Departure from Prayagraj or if you wish to travel to Varanasi, you should proceed to Varanasi

  • Maha Kumbh Mela is organized in January or February every 12 Years & Ardh Kumbh Mela happens every 6 years.
  • If tourists are travelling to Varanasi, they must visit a historical place referred to in Ramayana, Sitamarhi. Punaura Dham, Janki Mandir is the place where Goddess Sita went into the earth. The reigning deity at the temple is Devi Sita. The temple also houses a 108fft high statue of Lord Hanuman.
  • A small restaurant within the temple premise, serves delicious vegetarian food (without onion & garlic). This is a must-try spot.
