  • In North India, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, is one of the most significant religious pilgrimages, attracting a lot of tourists throughout the year. 
  • Vaishno Devi Yatra, which begins from Katra base town, and is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) is open to pilgrims throughout the year. 
  • Patnitop is a beautiful hill-station of Jammu region and it is about 85 km from Katra. 
  • Another famous shrine, Shiv Khori, is also 80 km from Katra, located amidst the hills of Reasi district. 
  • The cave is located at the end of a 3.5 km long trek, which you can cover either on foot or hire a pony.
  • Peak Season - For the duration of Navratri days and between April & July, one might need to wait for 8-10 hours in a queue to enter the inner sanctum for darshan. You might want to avoid the yatra during this time.
  • Best Time to Travel – Winter season - January to February (15th Jan - 13th Feb approximately) –During this duration, you might get a chance to enter the inner sanctum through the ancient Vaishno Devi cave, which remains closed during rest of the year.
  • Hotels – in Katra, as well as up near the shrine, you will find accommodations suitable to all budget types.
  • Government Guest House – IRCTC Lodge located next to Katra Railway Station.
  • SMVDSB Accommodation – You can book accommodation at multiple options available under SMVDSB. The average tariff range is Rs. 800-1500.
  • Private Properties – Hotels starting at Rs 1000 for double occupancy are available in Katra. The average tariff may go upto Rs 5000 or beyond.
  • Besides, there are several Dharamshalas, Budget Hotels and Homestays available in Katra.

How to reach Katra?

Katra town is well-connected to the rest of the country through different means of transport, which make it easy for pilgrims from everywhere to reach here.

  • Railhead – Apart from direct trains to Katra from Delhi railway station, there are several trains running between major cities and Jammu, which is just 50 km from Katra. 
  • By Bus/Taxi – Overnight bus service is available between Delhi-Katra (600 km). Direct buses (both govt. and private) run between nearby major cities, including Jammu, and Katra. Similarly, private taxis are also available between Jammu-Katra. You can book taxis from near Jammu railway station and bus-stand.
  • Airport – The nearest airport to Katra is at Jammu (50 km). 
  • Helicopter – Helicopter service is available between Katra-Sanjhi Chhat (enroute Vaishno Devi Shrine). Approximate charges are Rs. 1700 per person for a one-way ticket. You can board the helicopter from the helipad on Katra-Udhampur road, 2 km from main town. For more information, check here.

  • Katra is located in proximity to several other shrines and temples, which you can visit in a day and come back.
  • Navratri season (which comes twice every year) is considered to be the most auspicious time to visit the shrine. Though, these times can also be the most crowded ones to visit.
  • At Ardhkuwari, a separate cave, called the Garbhjun, is said to have been home to the Goddess for 9 months, just the way an unborn child lives in his/her mother’s womb.

Day – 1 Arrival in Katra

Day – 2 Shri mata vaishno devi Yatra (Katra to Bhawan)

You can begin your Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra early morning from Katra. The total trek (to and fro) is about 30 km long and most of it is reasonably steep.

  • Breakfast – You can choose to eat a light breakfast at any of the eateries available in Katra market prior to begin your journey. Most of the eateries run 24x7 or open up quite early in the morning to cater to the rush of pilgrims.
  • You may want to book an accommodation (especially if you are planning to spend the night up at the Bhawan) upstairs. There are quite a few options available on the SMVDSB website.

  • There are 3 main spots on the way to Bhawan - Ban Ganga, Ardhkuwari & Main Bhawan – besides several small stopovers you can take a rest while trekking.

At the Bhawan, you will have the holy darshan of the Goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali, in the form of Pindi (natural stone deity) inside the holy cave. Then you may proceed to Bhairo Temple which is around 2 km from Bhawan, Trek to Bhairon temple is steep, which makes it difficult for the pilgrims to walk. Either you can walk or can take the Ropeway (to & fro Rs 100) which is available near bhawan. 

  • There are free langar services available at some places enroute Bhawan and apart from that, there are Shrine Board operated Dhabas/restaurants where you can pay nominal amount for a hot meal and refreshments.
  • At the end of the Yatra and after having darshan, you can choose to either stay overnight at the Bhawan or start your return journey immediately after.
  • In case you return the same day, you will be spending the night at Katra.

Day – 3 Travel from Katra to Shivkhori shrine & return

Breakfast – Start your day with a sumptuous North Indian breakfast at Manoranjan Dhaba, located in the Katra market.

First Stop – Baba Jitto Shrine - This memorial, located 8 km from Katra, is dedicated to Baba Aghar Jitto and has become a recent attraction for the pilgrims who visit Katra.

  • Dera Baba Banda – A pilgrimage center for the Hindus and Sikhs is located 30 km from Katra and is famous for its Gurudwara by the banks of river Chenab.

Nau Devi Temple – A beautiful temple complex dedicated to Nine Goddesses located about 9 km from Katra railway station, you need to climb a set of stairs to reach the inner sanctum.

Baba Dhansar – This holy place, with a waterfall, is located by the Karua pond in village Karua, about 17 km from Reasi on the Katra-Reasi road. You will need to walk for about 200 m from the main road.

Shiv Khori Shrine – This holy cave is located at the end of a 3.5 km trek that begins in Ransoo village in Reasi Tehsil, about 80 km from Katra.

Day – 4 Travel from Katra to Patnitop

Before you proceed for Patnitop, stop for a hearty breakfast of Chhole Bhature made in Pure Desi Ghee at the famous Jagan Sweets, in the main marketplace.

  • There are two main stops that you shouldn’t miss on your way to Patnitop –
    • Samroli – This small hamlet, 60 km from Katra, is famous for its Kaladi-Kulcha combo and special Kashmiri tea.
    • Kud – Another small town, 7 km short of Patnitop, is known for its sweet shops selling the yummiest local sweet called Patisa.

Day – 5 Patnitop Local sightseeing – Nathatop, Naag Temple & Sanasar lake

Patnitop is known primarily for the peace and quiet it offers to tourists but it also has many interesting places to visit, like-

  • Naag Temple – one of the oldest temples in the region, it is located down a small trek from Patnitop town, amidst lush greenery.

Nathatop – This beautiful location is about 11 km from Patnitop and offers a great experience, especially during Jan-Feb, when it snows.

Sanasar – This place is the combined name of two small villages – Sana and Sar – and is about 20 km from Patnitop. Sanasar is also the base camp for the Shankhpal trek to the Shankhpal Temple, located at an altitude of 2,800 meters.

Suggestions & Recommendations

  • Dress comfortably for the Yatra, especially wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • In the monsoon season, keep a raincoat, umbrella handy, though there are ample shelters available on the way.
  • You can either purchase the Prasad at Katra or at Bhawan right before you end your journey if you want to avoid carrying it all the way up.
  • You need to produce a Yatra Parchi (Journey Slip) at the Bhawan before you can proceed for Darshan. You can either book one online or stand in a queue at the counter in Katra.
  • If you are interested in seeing the Live Morning Aarti in Holy Cave at Bhawan, you can pay Rs 2000.
  • Postpaid Mobile SIM–You need to get a prepaid SIM from Katra itself because as per local law, prepaid SIMs issued in other states do not work in J&K. You’re good if you own a Post-paid SIM.
  • In case you need a battery car from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan (6 km stretch), you need to book one either online or be ready to wait for 2-3 hours at the counter to book one. Charges are about Rs. 350 per person. 
  • Returning on the same day to Katra can be stressful. You can book yourself a night-halt at either Ardhkuwari or Bhawan.
  • You need to travel 30 km beyond Patnitop to enjoy the famed Rajma-Chawal meal at Peerah village on Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
  • For a private taxi from Katra to Patnitop, you need to shell out somewhere between Rs. 2800 per day plus Rs. 300 for the overnight stay of Driver. 
  • You can take a bus for Shiv Khori from Katra (Rs. 200 per ticket) between 8.30 am and 11.30 am.
