How to reach Bhavnagar?

  • By rail: Bhavnagar terminus is connected with the main Western Railway, connecting to all major cities like Ahmadabad, Surat, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kanpur. 
  • By air: Bhavnagar airport is connected to Mumbai.
  • By road: It is very easy to reach Bhavnagar by road. You will get frequent GSRTC (state-owned transport buses) from Ahmedabad (around 173 km), Vadodara (around 200 km) & Rajkot around (174 km). You can also book private taxies & buses. One option for bus booking is Tanna Travels.
  • By water: Bhavnagar provides you with an excellent experience to travel by water from Hazira (Surat) to Ghogha (Bhavnagar) which is possible through the RORO Ferry Service. It usually takes 3 hours of travelling. You can check with DG Sea Connect.
  • Local Travel: GSRTC buses and shared auto-rickshaws are available for seeing the sites in and around the town.

Day 1: Heritage walk, Takhteswar temple and Explore Local Food

Assuming you reach Bhavnagar by noon have an early lunch so that you can spend the rest of the day seeing the sights in the city.

You can have lunch at any of the below places:

  • Rasoi Dining Hall: This eatery is famous for its authentic Gujarati thali. It is located on Kalubha Road.

After having lunch start your sightseeing with the heritage structures.

  • Royal Cenotaphs: This place is also called Raj Samadhi. The erstwhile royal family has built this memorial for their loved ones who lost their lives in various battles. The architecture of this place is very attractive.
  • Darbari Kothar (Public Granary): The kothar is an old space, which was used to store grains and other essential items. This is around 50 meters from the Raj Samadhi.

In the year 1723, Maharaja Bhavsinhji Ratanji commissioned a British architect, R.M. Simms, to design this warehouse, in which the grain for the entire city could be stored so that no one would go hungry during war or natural calamity.

Now this structure is used to house archives by the government.

Ganga Deri: Walk around 700 meters from Darbari Kothar to reach Ganga Deri. It is also locally called the Taj Mahal of Gujarat and is a state-protected monument. 

Located on the bank of Gangajaliya Talav, this marble monument was commissioned by Maharaj Takhatsinhji, commemorating his wife Rajiba, who died in 1875 giving birth to their heir Bhavsinhji.

Krushnakumarsinhji Town Hall: Walk around 500 meters from Ganga Deri to reach the town hall. Also known as Darbar Hall, was built exclusively for the marriage ceremony of the Late Maharaja of Bhavnagar Shri Krishnakumarsinhji.

You can see the colonial style of the garden at the town hall, which is spread across over a 500-acre area.

NilamBag Palace: Walk around 2 km to reach NilamBag Palace. In the year 1879, Maharaja Saheb Takhatsinhji of Bhavnagar commissioned the German architect, Simms to design the Nilambag Palace.

This was the residence of the Royal family till 1984 when this was converted to a heritage hotel.

Gandhi Smruti: Gandhi Smruti is at a distance of around 3 km from the palace. The museum was inaugurated in the year 1955, and currently showcases books, rare photos, and memorabilia linked to the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

  • On the ground floor, is a museum housing different types of art forms of Gujarat and of different parts of India. It has an amazing collection of Textiles.
  • On the first floor, there is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi where his entire life is displayed in photographs, from childhood to his death.
  • Apart from the museum, Gandhi Smruti also houses a Khadi Gramodyog Bhandar and a library.

Shree Takhteswar Temple: The temple is at a distance of around 1.5 km from the museum. Built around 1893, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is on a hilltop that gives a panoramic view of the city.

The temple is constructed in Dravidian style with 18 ornate pillars. One must attend the evening Aarti of Lord Shiva at this temple. You can enjoy the sunset from here.

Day 2: Nishkalank Mahadev, Beach Visit, Shopping.

  • Victoria Park: Start your day with a morning walk at the historic Victoria Park. The key features of this park are its peaceful environment. Along with a 2 KM walking stretch, you can also enjoy a beautiful view of Krishna Kunj Lake. The park timings are between 6 am and 8.30 am.

After the walk, proceed for breakfast at any one of the below places.

  • Dave Mithaiwala: This eatery is famous for its Jalebi and Fafda. It is located near Gogha Chowk.
  • Rohan Fast Foods: This eatery is famous for its South Indian Dishes. It is located in Gogha Chowk.

Nishkalank Mahadev Temple: The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the sea.

After breakfast hire an auto-rickshaw to Koliyak beach to see the temple which is located a km into the sea. This temple is believed to be built by the Pandavas and has five Shivlings of different sizes.

One can reach the temple only on foot during low tide. During the high tide, the temple is submerged into the water and we can only see the flag atop it from the seashore. You can check the tide timings at Tide-Forecast.

After visiting the temple and spending some quality time on the beach move to have lunch at any one of the below places.

After lunch, you can visit either Kuda Beach (around 7 kms) or Ghogha Beach (around 13 kms) from the temple.

  • Kuda Beach: This is a 2 km long stretch of sandy seashore. Spread a mat on the beach and spend some quality time with your loved ones enjoying the waves, clear skies, and sandy shores.
  • Ghogha Beach: This is a km-long stretch of seashore. This serene beach is another option to spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Day 3: Visit Palitana, Bortalav & Explore Local Food

Tea Post: Start your day with breakfast at Tea Post. This eatery is famous for its Handavo (mixed lentil vegetable cake) with Tea. They have about 4 branches in the city.

Palitana: Palitana is associated with Jain legends and history. Adinatha, the first of the Jain Tirthankaras, is said to have meditated on the Shatrunjaya hill, where the temples were later constructed.

  • You can take a train, bus or taxi to reach this place from Bhavnagar. The Shatrunjaya Hill is the world's only mountain that has more than 900 temples, located at a distance of 50 km from Bhavnagar. Hence Palitana is also called the “City of Temples.”
  • The main temple is dedicated to Shri Rishabhdeva which is about 3800 steps up from the base level. After reaching its top, you can see the best view of the Shatrunjaya hills as well as the Shatrunjaya River & Palitana city.

If time permits see either Kadambgiri (around 30 km) or Hastagiri (around 23 km) or move back to town to see Bortalav.

  • Kadambgiri: Shri Kadambmuni, Ganadhar (chief disciple) of second Teerthankar, attained nirvana with many other munis here. Hence this place is called Kadambgiri Teerth.
  • Hastigiri: The sacred place was established by Bharat Chakravartin, who observed fast unto death and attained moksha here.
  • Bortalav: Return to Bhavnagar town to visit the Bortalav lake. Built-in 1872 as a water reservoir for drinking water and is spread across 380 hectares.

A variety of foods stalls are here on the corner of the lakes and fun rides for children too.
