  • Nainital is a popular hill station in the Kumaon foothills of the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
  • Perched at an altitude of over 2000 meter above sea level, Nainital is situated 285 km from the state Capital (Dehradun) and 345 km from the Indian capital, New Delhi.
  • This beautiful town is surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as ‘Sapta-Shring’.
  • Nainital, also known as the Lake District of Uttarakhand, You will easily get busses and taxi's from Kathgodam railway station to Nainital.
  • Weather & Clothing - While weather is pleasant throughout the year, winters get very cold. Heavy woollens need to be carried between November and February. Snowfall may happen at the higher altitudes in December & January.

How to reach Nainital?

  • Railhead - The nearest railway station is Kathgodam (35 km). There are buses and shared taxis are available to reach Nainital.
  • Airport - The nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 70 km from Nainital.
  • By Road - Nainital has two Bus stands; the Old Bus stand is located at Tallital in front of the Naini Lake while the New Bus Stand is located at the junction of Haldwani Road with Bhowali Road. Nainital is connected to major North Indian cities like Delhi, Dehradun, Lucknow, Kanpur, etc.

Day - 1 Travel from Kathgodam to Nainital and explore nearby attractions

After reaching Kathgodam, kindly head towards Nainital in a bus or a taxi (shared or reserved).

Naini lake. Start your local sightseeing with most beautiful lake of Nainital, It is a pear-shaped freshwater lake in the middle of the town. The lake is bounded by the Naina Peak and the Tiffin Top peak on the North-west and South-west sides.

Explore the Mall Road, which runs alongside the Naini Lake. It is presently known as the Govind Ballabh Pant Marg. It exhibits religious harmony as a temple, a Church, a Gurdwara and a Mosque are all located at this location.

  • There are many shops, hotels and restaurants along the road. Tourists buy decorative and aromatic candles, winter-wear and fancy clothes, perfumes, etc.
  • A Tibetan market on the way to the temple is famous shopping destination for tourists. Situated at the upper end of the Naini Lake,

Shri Maa Naina Temple - This is one of the 51 revered Shakti-Peeth. The temple hosts the Nanda Devi Mela on Nandashtami, during September every year.

The presiding deity of the Naina Devi Temple is Maa Naina Devi or Mata Sati. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is built on the spot where Goddess Sati's eyes fell when Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 different parts.

Day - 2 Trek to Naina Peak and visit nearby viewpoints.

Start the day with breakfast at the hotel.

  • Prepare for an adventurous trek to Naina (or Cheena) Peak. Halt at the Himalayan View Point. At a distance of 8 km from the Tallital bus stand, around 2000 mt above sea level, this viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the town of Nainital along with the surrounding hills and valleys.
  • Tourists may be able to view snow-capped Himalayan ranges with clear skies during the months of October, November and December.
  • Proceed to Cheena Peak. Naina Peak is the highest peak in Nainital that offers a bird's eye view of the Kumaon region. The to-and-fro journey takes around 3 hours.

Eco Cave Garden - This is a network of interconnected caves. Managed by the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam, this offers tourists a glimpse of wildlife through six animal caves.

Lunch option at Mall Road;

Snow Viewpoint - This spot offers majestic views of the Himalayan ranges like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot peaks. Although well connected by road, tourists may prefer to travel by Cable Car.  

Besides tea and snacks shops, there is also a temple housing images of Lord Rama and other deities. There is also a Tibetan monastery near the viewpoint. An amusement park offers kids’ activities like Go-karting, toy train, zipline, etc.

  • Cost of ropeway - Rs. 300 for to-and-fro journey.
  • Duration - Two hours.

You may explore the Mall Road in the evening for shopping before heading for dinner.

Day - 3 Explore Kainchi Dham & Return to home location.

Start your day bit early around 7:30 AM and after having breakfast at the hotel.

Raj Bhawan - Also known as the Governor house, this building of the British era serves as the house of the Governor of the state of Uttarakhand.

This double-storied building with 113 rooms, used to be the summer residence of the British Governor. It has a marvellous golf course and swimming pool within the premises. It is located 3 km from Mall Road.

  • Timings - 8 am to 5 pm
  • Entry Ticket - Rs 50 per adult for the Raj Bhavan and Rs. 450 for the Golf Course.
  • Raj Bhavan remains closed for public on Sunday and on all National Holidays.

Kainchi Dham  ,Almora Road - Appx 20 km from Nainital. Kainchi Dham has a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. An ashram was founded here by Shri Neeb Karori Baba in 1962. There is a cave where the sage prayed and meditated.

This place became particularly famous owing to the visit by Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. A fair is organized on the 15th of June every year, commemorating the laying of foundation stone. 

You may spend 2 hours exploring this place and admiring the surrounding beauty.

  • It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance if travelling in May or June. 
  • For local commuting, tourists may hire a bike. The average rental is around Rs. 1500 for Bullet Bike.
  • Almora’s popular  Bal mithai is available in Nainital. Tourists may purchase sweets from Mamu’s Sweets or Saraswati Sweet Shop.
  • Tourists may add a visit to the Jim Corbett National Park, which is around 70 km from Nainital. They may enjoy jeep safari in the Corbett Tiger Reserve in the morning.

  • Naukuchiataal - It is a beautiful lake located at 25 km distance from Nainital, Many tourists prefer to book hotel here or travel to this lake for sightseeing.
  • Ranikhet - one of the most popular attractions in Uttarakhand that is blessed with some of the best scenic vistas and natural beauty. It is located at a distance of around 55 Km from Nainital.
  • Kausani - It is a beautiful hill station and village ( Bageshwar district) located at a distance of 115 km from Nainital.
  • Mukteshwar - It is a pleasing hill station located at a distance of 50 km from Nainital, If you are looking at spending time with nature at a high altitude ( 2200 meter) then Mukteshwar is a good choice.
