  • Most tourists love to visit this region, above all, for the famous Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary.

  • You will find a large chunk of Bengali community staying along the North Odisha coastline, especially upto the Bhadrakh town.

How to reach Balasore?

  • Railhead: Trains from all major cities take you upto two major cities - Bhubaneswar and Balasore
  • By Bus: Bus service to different parts of North Odisha run from the two major railway stations – Bhubaneswar and Balasore. You can also hire private taxis as per your convenience. 
  • Airport: Nearest airport in this region is at Bhubaneswar (200 KM) or you may travel to Balasore from the Kolkata airport.

  • Digha Beach, located on the Odisha-West Bengal border, is one of the widest beaches in the world. It is about 93 KM from Balasore.

Day 1 – Bhubaneswar, Lingaraj Temple

Lingaraj Temple -  One of the oldest temples in Odisha, it is made according to the Kalinga-era architecture. Non-Hindus are not allowed entry into the temple premises.

Day 2 - Bhubaneswar to Balasore - 200 km

Reach Balasore and relax in hotel. OTDC Panthanivas is a good option to stay at.

Visit the Chandipur Beach - Also known as the Receding sea beach, water on this beach recedes 4-5 km into the sea once or twice during low tide.

Visit the Integrated Test Range of DRDO, where a number of Indian missiles (such as Prithvi, Agni and Shaurya) have been tested and launched. The ITR is located on the Abdul Kalam Island (previously called the Wheelers Island).

Popular temples in Balasore – There are many popular temples in close vicinity, which you can include in your itinerary.

  • Emami Jagannath Temple (15 KM) is claimed to be an exact replica of Puri’s Shri Jagannath Temple.
  • Khirachora Gopinath Temple (9 KM) – It is believed that Madhabendra Puri, Guru of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Shri Chaitanya himself have visited this temple and offered prayers here.
  • Panchalingeswar Temple (30 KM) – Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this shrine is located atop a hill in the Nilgiri range. There are 263 stairs leading to this temple, which is quite popular among the pilgrims to North Odisha.

Day-3 Balasore to Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary - 80 km

Your first stop of the day would be the Similipal National Park, famous for being a home to the Bengal Tiger as well as other wild animals and birds. 

  • The three protected areas within this Park – Simlipal Tiger Reserve, Hadgarh Wildlife Sanctuary and Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary – are great for wildlife safari. Best months to visit are from November to June.
  • At Simlipal, you can do trekking, bird-watching or go for a guided jungle Jeep-safari during night.

Night stay in Simlipal can be done at various nature camps or government-run Eco Retreat as well as at Aranya Nivas Resort. These accommodations are located at different entry points to the Park.

  • You can check with the resort for the exact timings of various Tribal Dance performances as well at the time of booking.
  • For those not interested in a night stay inside the National Park, you can also stay overnight at Baripada (100 KM).
  • Other must-visit places near Simlipal are Barehipani Waterfall and Jaranda Falls.

Day 4 - Baripada to Digha Beach (West Bengal) - 110 km.

Digha Beach – Relax in the sun, enjoy the waves and do fun water sports activities on one of the widest beaches in the world, located in West Bengal, just next door to Odisha. 

  • Talasari Beach – Also known as the “Goa” of Odisha, this is another beautiful beach located 10 KM away from Digha.
  • Mandarmani Beach – If you want to see red crabs crawling along a beach, go to this beach, which is 21 KM from Digha and also located in West Bengal.

Day 5 – Return from North Odisha

From Mandarmani, you can either travel to Kolkata (180 KM) or to Balasore (135 KM) to return home. 

Things to Buy

  • Odisha is known for its Filigree work objects like jewellery and other Silver items. You can buy these souvenirs from any high-end shops at good hotels or from central markets in any city or town.
  • Stone sculptures, Pattachitra (Palm Leave or Cloth Paintings), Painted coconuts and Wooden Masks are some other types of souvenirs that you can purchase from North Odisha.

Suggestion & Recommendations

  • There is no telephone or WiFi network coverage at Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Travel to Digha Beach & Mandarmani Beach only if you have ample time at your disposal because both are located in West Bengal.
  • Don’t forget to sample “Mudhi Mansa” – a popular local dish of Baripada.
  • Chandabali (115 KM from Balasore & 45 KM from Bhadrakh) is an entrance point to the famous Bhitarakanika Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as the ‘Amazon of India’). You will find regular ferry/boat service and alternatively, the Sanctuary can also be accessed by road from Dangamala side.
  • If you choose to stay at Bhitarakanika, you may add 1 or 2 more days to your itinerary.
  • Chandbali is also the gateway to remote beaches like Gahirmatha, which is the only place in the world where Olive Ridley turtles come to breed. In fact, the Gahirmatha Beach separates Bhitarakanika Sanctuary from Bay of Bengal.
