  • Kochi, previously known as Cochin, is the commercial capital of Kerala.
  • It is popularly known as the “Queen of Arabian Sea” as it is one of the world’s finest natural harbors.
  • Old Kochi (currently known as West Kochi) is comprised of a group of islands including Willingdon Island, Fort Kochi, and Mattancherry.
  • It has been a historic trading destination too, with its prominence growing especially in 1341 AD, after the collapse of Kodungallur port.
  • Kochi must be your starting point if you want to explore Central Kerala. It is well connected to other cities in the region like Munnar, Thekkady, and Alleppey.

  • Railhead – The Ernakulum railway station is well connected to Trivandrum (Capital of Kerala), from where you will get trains to all major cities in the country.
  • Airport – The nearest airport is Cochin International airport (37 KM).
  • Seaport – You can travel to Kochi via sea route from national as well as international destinations like Goa, Mumbai, Colombo, and Male. Regular boats also operate from cities like Kumarakom, Alleppey and Kottayam.
  • By Road – Bus service to Kochi is available from all the major cities and towns in South India.

Day 1 – Kochi, Mattancherry Palace & Paradesi Synagogue Visit

Once you reach your hotel, you can explore meal options nearby. MG Road is a suitable location to choose for a hotel and it offers accommodation in the range of Rs. 1500-Rs 4000.

Thoppumpady Bridge (7 KM from MG Road) – This bridge used to divide into half to let the ships pass at the time of British rule in India. However, in the present times, the bridge is permanently closed.

Explore Mattancherry – There are two things to explore here

  • Mattancherry Palace - Also known as the ‘Dutch Palace’, Mattancherry was built in 1555 by the Portuguese and later renovated x`by the Dutch. The palace is home to beautiful artifacts, weapons & mural paintings as well as a temple of Lord Krishna & Goddess Bhagavati, the royal family’s deity. You need at least an hour to visit the Palace properly.
  • Jew Street - If you are an antique lover, you should not miss this place. You can purchase souvenirs, local spices & handicrafts from here.

Paradesi Synagogue – This worship place was built in 1568 to facilitate worshipping for Paradesi Jewish community in Kochi. The Synagogue is open between Sunday & Thursday and closed on Friday afternoon, Saturday (whole day) and on any Jewish holiday.

  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica (5 KM from Mattancherry) – This church is one of the 8 basilicas in India and it is located on way to Fort Kochi. Built-in the impressive Portuguese architecture style, it is a must-visit place.
  • St Francis Church - This 500-year-old church is the first European Church built in India by Portuguese. The Dutch renovated it in 1779, The highlight of this church is that famous explorer, Vasco Da Gama, is buried here after his death in 1524.

Kaprikkad Abhayaranyam – This is an open zoo where you can find a chance to watch famous elephant bath, head there early in the morning, preferably between 6 AM and 8 AM.

Aluva Shiva Temple (25 KM from MG Road) – Located on the banks of the Periyar river, this temple dates back to the Ramayan-era.

Lunch Option;

  • Sarovaram - Try their Sadhya Thali, only available in the afternoon.
  • Alluvar /Edapally – They are famous for their Puttu & Kadala curry combination.
  • Seagull is also a very famous restaurant right next to the sea. You can enjoy a good view along with good food here. 

Lulu Mall – You cannot leave Kochi without visiting the largest shopping mall of Southern India though you might need more than just a day to complete this visit.

Dinner at Lulu Mall – You will find some very interesting options to have your dinner at the Mall’s food court.

Day 3 - Departure from Kochi

Either you can go back to your home location, or proceed further to explore other parts of Kerala like Munnar, Thekkady or Alleppey.

Things to Buy

  • You can purchase local spices like black pepper from Kochi.
  • Shell showpieces, Kathakali masks, coir handicrafts are good souvenirs to take back home.
  • Locally-grown tea and coffee can also be bought from specific shops.
  • If you are looking to display a bit of Kerala at home, you can take back Netipattam, which is used to decorate elephants during traditional celebrations.

Suggestions & Recommendations

  • Even though Kochi also has good metro rail Network, the best way to enjoy Fort Kochi is to walk on foot.
  • If you take a ferry from Fort Kochi to Kochi, it would save your 25 minutes of road journey.
  • Don’t miss the “Guruvayur Temple” (90 KM from MG Road), which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. You may have to follow a prescribed dress code though.
